Just installed the new version of Eirtext pro.

    What a terrible update.

    The UI is cack now.

    Recent history is all gone.

    Favorites is gone.

Its much more awkward to use.

Its like some designer from primary school got at it.

    Its horrible now.

It used to be one of the best apps, but its been ruined.

Well, actually I thought the same thing. Been using it side by side with Eirtext vanilla, so when I updated in the middle of this morning I was kinda taken aback, especially by the loss of "history" (though all those will be stored in your account on O2.ie).

It looks for all the world like Eirtext now but does international and PUSH.

Took me a while to 'get' it because of the similar appearance between the two apps, but then it hit me....with a little bit of encouragment from Vinny himself. There is no need for history any more as the app functions more or less like Apple Messages -the 'history' is still there for you within your conversations to each contact as you progress.

Likewise, as you populate the UI with messages, well, de facto, those ARE your favourites. Really, there's no difference as my former 'favourites' just eventually became a long list in any case.

And, if you sign up for PUSH, then you will receive messages within the app too and you will be able to see the thread of your conversations henceforth -a history, if you will.

Try scrolling back through a message you are typing. You just cant see enough of it. Thbe recipients list takes up far too much of the screen. This could be used so you can see all of your message your message. You cant have carraige returns now either in your message.

I preferred it the other way. I still think its a huge step back.
Definitely dont like it the way it is now.

I agree with you for the most part, but having been using Eirtext 3.0 as well for quite a while now, I suppose I'm used to it. However, it did come as a shock this morning, in that it appears so similar to its free sibling, it doesn't seem to have any wow factor any more.

However, the old history was a pox to navigate, once you'd been using the app for some time and had acquired a lot of 'baggage'.

I'm sure a lot of these concerns will be taken on board and the app will develop for the better over time.

Am a bit disappointed myself, tried sending 3 different texts using my settings which I know to be valid as it lists my remaining texts left but none will send. All get through the logging into account but fail on sending. A bit annoying...

Free version seems to work ok with Vodafone...pro version won't work....maybe it's the Vodafone website?

Free version doesn't work for me with vodafone, was working fine til two days ago then it just says logged in and won't send, have given up and am using jelly SMS now without any problems, highly recommend it over eir text at this stage, ui is a lot better plus no issues with small writing and it's a pain in the ass when it just keeps saying failed sending.

Then there's an update on the app store that instructs vodafone users not to update, so there's constantly a one on the app store logo, like, when am I ment to update? Do I have to keep going in and hecking when it's ready? Why not just put the o2 and vodafone fix in the same release?

I don't like the way it just deleted all my previous messages but I'm known to object to these things. I like the progress bar which is an improvement over waiting an age and presuming a message is sending. It's important to know something is happening! The font is now too small and we seem to have no options to correct this. Also, I'm getting text over-running the text boxes, which is messy. Generally speaking, it's a bad update....jellysms you say ?

The new 3.1 version is supposed to fix the broken connection with Vodafone.

On o2? Check your password doesn't need to be reset on the o2.ie site. This happened to me after I subscribed to PUSH. I don't know if it's the app's fault or mine,as I am convinced I didn't enter my settings wrongly. But it has also happened to another friend of mine, and he didn't get PUSH. Anyway, o2 sorted me out and everything, including PUSH is just working fine.

Thanks, just tried Jellysms. So much crisper in the UI dept.
Bye bye eirtext. They dropped the ball big time on that update.

    Check this.

I couldnt be bothered registering to vote on it but i would vote to get it reversed.

Sure if jelly sms is any good then i wont be needing eirtext anymore

I use JellySMS too -in fact I use each one for different accounts. It is an excellent app too.

My big disappointment with Eirtext is composing SMS. If you go back to your message because you've thought of something else, it is so easy to completely erase the message you've just written.

In these hard times, saving money is key and so an O2.ie account is a must for saving money on international SMS.

But now, Eirtext offers PUSH between users and this, for me, will become indispensable. Sure, I'm disappointed at the new UI but I'll get over it. JellySMS is not going to be offering PUSH anytime soon.

Do you actually know that many people with iPhones to really notice using this feature? It's mostly pointless for me, but I appreciate the inclusion I guess.

I encourage people to install Eirtext on their iPhones. It's free for them, allows me to PUSH them and obliges them to actually use their webtexts in reply as the PUSH messages show up in their Eirtext app instead of "Messages".

    Fair enough!

I'd love to see a jailbroken version of this that plugs straight into the native text app.

In the meantime I'll work on finding more friends with iPhones. Is there a place you guys meet..?

I'm obviously in the minority, but I just downloaded the update and I really like it! It's pretty much the same interface as the regular messages interface, with the conversation bubbles. So it does maintain history, although my old texts vanished... No harm. Thumbs up from me anyway.
What does the 'push' functionality give me if I pay the 79 cents for it?

That Eirtext Pro users (like ourselves) can freely IM each other at no cost other than the 79c per annum. Keep webtexts for those without iPhones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,492 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Cheers. I'd love if eirtext could somehow integrate more seamlessly with regular texts, e.g. Someone texts me, but the text appears in 'messages' rather than in eirtext. So the text conversations end up getting split between eirtext and regular messages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Apple don't allow that so until they do, we just have to make do with it this way!

Any mates i know with an iphone use Beejive to talk to each other. With push its like having MSN on all the time. With the added bonus of being able to message anyone logged into the desktop version or other smartphone ims too.

Push for text messages that is only any good for people on iPhones doesnt compare to beejiveim at all.
What do you do when you want to IM someone without an iPhone and eirtext?

A petition? What sado thought of that seriously????

I dont know Vinny but he has saved us all a fortune since Eirtext came out.
I had Eirtext and Jelly sms installed together. I use them both I actually slightly prefered Jelly cause it was faster.

Lads just give it a chance before you shoot your mouth off.Its change for the better, just work with it. I now find Eirtext faster between opening and writing and sending.

I still cant get over the petition.

Use some of the 250 free texts you get from O2, or the texts in your contract. Jaysus even try email!

Thanks to everyone who gave constructive feedback on the update. I've learned first hand that most people do not like change, but after a few days' use, the majority of users are warming to the update and are generally happy with the new features and UI.

Just to put a few minds at ease, I am working on an update to allow easier viewing of the typed-in message. It's taken this long to get it right and it's still in "prototype" phase, but I hope to be adding it in the 3.1.1 update (3.1 is already in review with Apple).

    Hi

May be off the track and sorry if hijacked, but Eirtext asks for username and password login

I am with voda and I login using my phone number and a password

Do I enter my phone no. as username ?

    Cheers

I`m using Eirtext free and it hasnt been working the last few weeks so i was looking forward to the update to fix it. So i upgraded when it came out and yes the message sends but the UI tells me it failed to send with error "Message sending failed! Please check that you have entered bla ....."

I have re-installed it twice - removed from iphone and itunes, re-entered my details twice. No avail. Anyone else seeing this?

    Oh I`m using vodafone..

It hasn't worked with Vodafone for a while (you're advised of this in the app's notes when downloading). To be fixed in next version.

A minor issue I've noticed - if you send a relatively longer text message and you go back to view it in the "history" it appears to be truncated. At first I thought I may have sent it like that, but I reckon it's probably the "conversation bubble" in the history is of a limited size ?

It's more likely a UI issue. If you wouldn't mind emailing me a screenshot, I'd love to see it so that I can work on fixing the issue. You can send it to eirtext at vinnycoyne.com.

It won't charge you again. Once you purchase again, it will tell you that you've already downloaded the app and that to re-download it is free.

It's more likely a UI issue. If you wouldn't mind emailing me a screenshot, I'd love to see it so that I can work on fixing the issue. You can send it to eirtext at vinnycoyne.com.

    Cheers.

I had a look through my msg history again there, and it's hard to find an example that illustrates it properly! A couple of very short messages (2-3 lines) got truncated on me for no apparent reason... but then much longer messages did not get truncated! So it's not a consistent pattern if you know what I mean.

Another thing I noticed in a couple of messages - one or two words sometimes fall off the edge of the little green conversation bubble, spilling outside the bubble's boundary, into the surrounding white space.

    Bit of a newbie here...

can anyone tell me how can I keep the conversations in Eirtext

I use Eritext for texting non 02 customers..but when they reply it, comes into my Message inbox.. so it prompts me to reply from there.

I thought Eirtext Pro allows me to have conversations in Eirtext, but it doesnt, its the same as the Free Version?

Am I doin something wrong, is International Texts the only + with pro over free Eirtext?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

If your contacts use EirText Pro or EirText for Mac to text you, then the messages they send to you will arrive in the EirText Pro app, instead of the Messages app. This uses the Push messaging feature, which does not use up your webtexts.

More on push messaging here: http://www.vinnycoyne.com/lackofconcept/?p=618

Apple do not allow access to the SMS database, so it is not possible to receive standard SMS in EirText Pro.

The Pro version has a bunch of extra features over the free version:

    - International SMS (O2.ie, Vodafone.ie, and the pay-for bulk SMS providers).
    - Multi-line message input.
    - Message scheduling (O2.ie only, coming soon for Vodafone.ie users).
    - Landscape mode with bigger keyboard text-entry area.
    - Options to Call / SMS a contact by tapping on the conversation bubbles.
    - O2.ie Delivery reports when used in conjunction with EirText for Mac.
