i had an external hd and it died so I removed it but was wondering if its safe to put a different hd into the case and use it as an external. i don't see any reason why it won't but don't want to kill another one in the same week by fiddling. anyone do this already?

No problem, You can put a larger one in now. There's only 2 types of hard drive interface, Ide and Sata, find out which one

Should be a very easy job just unscrew and slide in. Perhaps you should check the drive that was external first to make sure that it isn't just the external case that's faulty.
