While they might not have the street cred of many others, a rover 25 or 45 isnt a bad car at all, provided you dont get one with head gasket issues on the 45. As rover have gone pretty much by the way of the dinosaurs, they are a good cheap option. I have a rover 45 2002 and is a 1.4 so not too big to start with. It is gold in colour and a hatchback and very clean and respectable, with the head gasket etc. done last summer. The average value of this car would be about 2,000 euro, but cheaper examples would be available if you want to go back down the years. They are roomy, comfortable and well able to go, without crippling you with running costs. Keep your engine size down to 1.4 or less if possible, with no fancy additions that will push your insurance costs up. Most of the jap cars are pretty reliable also, with lots to choose from on the market, and get someone with a bit of knowledge to give your potential purchase a good look over. Pick your car, do your research, find out its sins and decide your price. Buy with your head if possible and not your heart and good luck.

    Something like this?

Once it hasn't been abused it should be very reliable.
Decent power and MPG in a 1.3 engine. :)

I'd suggest a Corsa, but go for the 1.2. The 1l isn't bad but drive both first. I wouldn't hold out on getting insurance for less than €2.5k though as an 18 year old with no previous policy.

Either a Volkwagon Polo, toyota corolla or Nissan Almera.

Those would be the 3 I would look for anyway seeing as they are pretty solid cars.

I had one of the Corsa B's (1995) and my opinion of them is avoid if possible! Plenty of better alternatives out there. The gearbox isn't the smoothest, my mate has one as well and same feel to his gearbox

Yeah I'll second that on the gearboxes, my '96 corsa prefers to be put into first before reverse or it wont go backwards :P That and fifth needs a firm hand to engage.

Other than that though, and a leaky washer pump, just ticked over 100k and 13 years last month and it's still going very strong. Resillient little car, be a shame when I sell it in a few months.
