A friend of mine wants a laptop, fairly basic with a 15" screen. here's the catch, he doesnt want to spend much over €350.

i said to go for a netbook, but he wants the 15" screen. seeing as i dont do/like laptops, i was hoping one of you fine people could help me out? should he just go down the dell route, or is there a better place for cheap laptops?

found THIS on dell.ie inspiron-15. the first one for €379. any good?

to cut costs, windows XP will be fine if possible..

No. That laptop is woeful. Completely rubbish spec. The one for 429 is far batter. But i don't know whether it's too far out of your friends budget?

    What about this?

Spec isn't "spec-tacular" but its not gonna be for €350.

Unless he already has a Retail License or you can find a model that still ships with XP, its actually going to add to your cost. Not deduct from it.

On those Insprions - Christ what a stupid trio Dell has on offer:

-The first one has the best processor and imo I'd just buy more ram later at the expense of the low 1gb of ram it comes with. However the OS is Basic? Eww.

-The second one - 499 - is the best deal. 64 bit with 2.0ghz dual, its good on performance. With high ram and hard disk space too. If he can overstep his budget a little it might be considerable.

-I cant agree with the 425. You take too much of a hit on specs.

The other thing is look at the orange texts: You get much better value on the 499. Its 206 euros savings versus 115 or none.
