24 May be Axed

    Saw this on IMDB:
Kiefer Sutherland faces bidding goodbye to Jack Bauer as early as next year - producers are considering axing hit show 24,

Sutherland was recently named the highest earning actor in a drama series by TV Guide magazine, netting $550,000 (£366,600) for every outing as action man Bauer.

But programming bosses at America's Fox network admit the show's eighth season could be its last.

TV executive Kevin Reilly tells the New York Post, "It's our last contractual season of 24. There are a lot of moving parts, so we're not sure what will happen after that.

"It's going to come down to a business decision. It's not an inexpensive show on the network books and we also want to finish strong. This is not a show we want to prop up... We haven't made any decision whether it's back or not."

I stopped watching in Season 6 (can ya blame me) but feel that most shows should not out-stay their welcome, especially something like '24' which I think just begins to re-thread some scenarios from a relatively limited concept.

Last season I felt was great

Season 7 was great. Really enjoyed it. I wouldnt mind it ending after the eight season though. Give Jack a good ending, and quit while they are ahead.

Eight seasons is pretty good going tbh.

It'd be kind of ironic if they were to cancel it after the strongest season in years. I mean they left it running after three abysmal seasons before that (four, five and six).

    Are you mental?

Five was the best season of the whole series!

I'm sure 1 was great when it came out, but for late watchers season 5 wins hands down

    3, 4 and 6 were MEH

Most people who have come to 24 late say that season 5 was great but you will find very few who've watched it from the first season that will concur.
    That was the season that
the pres turned out to be a terrorist I think
. Ludicrous storyline. You're entitled to your opinion though.

I watched 24 from the start and I'd say season five was the best!

I also enjoyed season seven but I agree the show is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

I don't mind if season 8 is the last. As long as they go all out and create the greatest season ever.

That means more guns, more explosions, more hand to hand combat and even more human rights being violated, preferably with a beheading thrown in:D

Oh, and more Kim Bauer please.

as sad as i would be to see it go, i can see their point of trying to end it on a high.. its such a great show i think it deserves to go out on a high rather then be milked... i wonder if next season is the last season will they be doin the film then or have they given up on that idea..iirc they said they'd do the film when the series was finished.

I would tend to agree you. It would be good to finish the series before it gets too jaded and runs out of ideas. Season 6 was by far the worst, but season 7 redeemed the makers of "24". They need to come out with one more good story for Day 8, using the elements of 24 which have made it so good overall.
I know what I will be saying, though, if it really is being axed:
    DAMMIT!

If I'd been asked at the end of season 6 would I be happy if it was axed I probably would have said yes, but season 7 was epic and if they manage to continue with that quality in season 8, I'll be sad to see it go.

Thought that Season 4 was the best overall (am I the only one). I'm re-watching Season 6 at the moment, what a pile of ****. Season 7 was suprisingly excellent. If they kept up the level of writing and kept the ideas fresh I would have no problems with the series continuing.

Am i the only one that thought season 7 was utter rubbish. i felt it was just the best parts from previous seasons all thrown into the same season. Would happily have seen it end after season 4. the last 3 have been hopeless.

I though the last season was great. Im getting fed up with all these really good tv shows been cancelled. Like the crap you see on tv, big brother and other reality tv ****e and they cancel good well thought out shows and persist to show all types of other crap on tv.

Iv been watching the show from season 1 and I always felt it started to dip after season 3. I still kept watching as each season got worse and culminated in what has to be one of the worse seasons yet, season 7.
Your not alone believe me. I decided after watching season 7 that that was it for me. I would watch no more. The show should have stopped after season 5 IMO

When I watched season 7 it felt like a parody of itself. Like a naked gun spoof of 24. I kept expecting Lieutenant Frank Drebin to walk in at any moment.

After nearly 10 years it is bound to be axed season 8 is starting on Jan 17 according to the website.

Bit of a late comer, watched season 1-4 in the last month and a bit, and have to say its a fantastic show.

Im big into telly series, Shield,Unit, The Wire, Sopranos and the likes, but can safely say 24 is right up there and a season hasnt dissapointed me yet

Season 5 was fantastic! Best series that I've watched
And I did watch every series, got all the boxsets after watched them in order.

I wouldn't have minded to see it axed after Season 6
Must check out Season 7 now since it's getting good reviews here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

Realistically they should've stopped after this season. 7 days.... one week.

It'd be much better that way. Having said that Day 7 was superb. A much needed boost after the dire Day 6.

I'm hoping Day 8 will surpass Day 7. My expectations are extremely high and they've set the bar high now. I just hope they don't fall short of it.

The only season i disliked was season 6, and i also thought season 3 wasn't great, but still enjoyed it. Apart from that i've enjoyed them all with season 1 being my favourite and season 5 a close second.

I'd miss it if it was axed but at the same time I wouldn't mind too much, as it has had a great run. I think the most ideal way would be to end it at season 8, and then do a film to end it all

I have to say, I thought the thing has gotten better and better from season 3 onwards.

Really enjoyed season 7 and cant wait for season 8

I hope it gives closure on the threads that were wide open from the end of 7

You would have to compare it to LOST, but also the fact that not everyone has Sky 1 in the UK and its repeats on both Sky 1 and Sky 2.

Sky 1 average share in the UK is around 1%. Their top ten shows range from 1.3million down to 200K, while Sky 2 has 163K down to 120K and Sky 3* has 272k down to 201k.

*Sky 3 is available on Freeview, Sky 2 is not.

Fox president Kevin Reilly has admitted that the network is yet to make a decision about a 24 renewal.
Rumours have surfaced suggesting that the show may not return next year after a run of poor ratings in its Monday night slot.
However, Reilly said that the network is still "proud" of the show and its recent performance.
"It's a very tough call. It's a huge part of our legacy, and there's not a lot of shows that could do a 9 share against the Olympics," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "Tremendous sales asset for us still; a show we're so very proud of creatively. So it's not an easy call."

Yeah, because iirc even House was given repeats to run during the Olympics. 24, being the non stop season, was decided to run fresh episodes. (Always a risk during the Olympics). In fact, iirc, only Smallville was the only show that held up and improved during the Olympics.

    Looking bad, folks....
    Tick, tick, tick, BONG!!!!

    “24’s” time is almost up.

20th Century Fox TV and Fox appear ready to end the long-running hit after this season, the show’s eighth.

Studio and network execs declined comment -- but it’s believed that the final decision will be made in the next day or two. Move is not a huge surprise, but still reps the end of an era for Fox.

“24” helped usher in Fox’s ratings surge in the 2000s, as the franchise -- along with “American Idol” and “House,” among other series -- led the network’s adults 18-49 ratings crown.

But the cost of producing “24” has continued to increase, while ratings have dipped. A one-time critical darling, “24” has also received its share of knocks from reviewers this season.

The studio is said to be considering shopping “24” to other nets -- but given the thriller’s age and price tag, it’s believed that the interest from other outlets will be limited.

But even as bell tolls for “24,” the franchise is far from over. Sutherland and the “24” team have been keen on turning the show into a movie property, and have made major strides in recent months toward making that long-term goal a reality.

Or looking good, depending on your view :). I do still enjoy the show but 8 seasons is a very solid run for any show and I wouldn't mind it ending at this stage. Better that, than getting another season 6!

Yeah have to agree while it is 8 seasons so far it will be 10 years on the air if they go for season 9 (Sept 2001 to Sept 2011).

I love this show and I still look forward to it each season but I do think the time has come.

    Mandy won't be returning :(

It's time for 24 to end. They've recycled the plots so many times the show is a cliché. It's still good fun and I'd like a 24 movie but enough is enough.

Still more of Tony, Mandy and President Logan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

I still really enjoy 24, but I agree that it's all a bit stale now. It'd kinda suck if we heard nothing more about Tony or Audrey (I'm curious to see if she recovered).

Seems NBC is very interested in picking up the show if FOX decides to dump it:
24 may live to see another day after all.

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that 20th Century Fox has approached NBC about picking up the series should Fox opt to cancel it — and the Peacock is considering it. “There’s definitely some interest,” says an insider close to the talks.

So it may not be the end of the line for Jack after all...

    24 Officially Canceled

1 hour ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Earlier this month it was reported that this season of 24 would likely be the last for the series as the ratings have dropped and Fox seems disinterested in continuing production. At the time it was mentioned that the studio is considering shopping the series to other networks, but everyone believed that interest would probably be limited due to the high costs involved. It was later reported that Fox has been approached by NBC to pick up the series. But that last ditch effort did not come through. Series director/producer Jon Cassar announced minutes ago on Twitter that the show has been officially canceled: News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching Previously: Last month it was announced that Billy Ray had been hired to pen the screenplay http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/03/26/24-officially-canceled/

They're still going ahead with a movie as the definite ending though, so it's not like season 8 will be the very end to Jack's story:

    http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/03/26/24-to-end-this-season-film-version-in-the-works/

It had a good run though, I have no problem with it ending at this point.
