savage, I would love one of those. Personally I cant understand why they don't have a higher resale value similar to say a Merc SL. If you don't mind me asking Alpina, how much was the VRT on it? Also, what are the things to look out for when buying one?

€750 for that one back in '04 & €1, 500 for a 1990 635 Highline a few months back. As with any car, the usual FSH if possible is a serious bonus & be careful/wary of rust/rust/rust. Plenty, & I mean plenty of cowboys out there when it comes to these. Same rules apply for any older car, spend as much as you can day one as it will save you €000's in the long run! A back to bare metal refurb & respray (with documentation of labour & spray) will save you many a headache!

If you are seriously keen on one or something similar, I have found the following pretty reputable (note only my 2 c)

    www.oldcolonelcars.co.uk www.bmwclassics.co.uk
    www.pistonheads.co.uk
www.vrc1986.co.uk & no have nothing to do with any of them, just hours/years of browsing. Happy hunting...;)

Junkyard has an early 90s 635 for sale for €3k iirc. Just goes to show how cheap cars are over here at the mo...

Ya...I saw it at the time but the one I brought in was well worth the VRT, a bit of a rare find!;)

The road tax is killing all these cars until they turn vintage, it's a shame really because most of them end up sitting around and just rot away.:(

A very true statement,25 years should be the vintage point at least, most cars dont even last that long anyway.

That is really lovely alpina. I'd love one just like it.

Interesting reasoning. I like it. Might as well make the vintage point 15 years then. Most cars don't even last that long and with the bonus of the low tax around the corner, many a big engined future classic would treated well and be saved.

That combined with strict enforecememt of NCT testing (maybe even yearly) so that we don't end up with a sea of plain old bangers would give a massive boost to (semi-)classic motoring in Ireland!

Personally I feel the whole tax issue seriously needs to be addressed, having to pay up to €1, 500 odd in year 29 & then €46 in year 30 is ludicrous  There really should be some sort of a step back system maybe from 25+ & reduce down....Before I get slated & yes I realise it is my own choice to have/tax such but really makes no sense, tax the petrol maybe  in my own case, paying €1, 200 & to make use of maybe 30/40 times a year at most is pretty pricey (yes I know my choice) End of rant....;)

A sliding scale would be nice except then people would just wait....another year or maybe two years etc!

better still just lash it on the fuel and be done with it.

New green cars are supposed to be very frugal, so they use less fuel, so they cost less to drive per mile. It pays to be green and there is a penalty for being an old and dirty thirsty V8. Seems fair to me.

The more fuel you use, the more you pollute. The more you pollute, the more you pay. It can't get any fairer than that.

I think you'd have to have a "commercial" rate as with normal tax.

Though to be honest, I think we're better off keeping our heads down in the current climate.

Thought carbon tax was for that and road tax was to, well, maintain the roads and infrastructure. If road tax is put on fuel it means that you are punished for living in the country and having to commute for work and shopping. It takes a fair bit of fuel even with a small car. Can't discriminate against country folk (btw I live in the city).

Don't country folk require more infrastructure getting to work/shops though? ;)
