From Eric Cartmans post in this thread
    Commercial Vehicle Conversion :

Requirments for 50 euro VRT :

Wheelbase must be above 2.4 meters
GVW of vehicle must be over 2.45 tonnes

What You Have To Do :

Windows have to have Metal Instead of/In addition to glass (Metal must be welded, riveted or adhesived on (no screws)

Seats Must be removed and all mounting brackets must be cut or filled

Seatbelts have to be removed and their mounts cut or filled

A rigid metal floor level with the rest of the cab must be installed, has to be supported by metal and must be Rivited, Adhesived or welded in (no screws/bolts)

    What I Did :

I converted my kia Sorento to commercial for about 250 euro (companies charge 1.5-2.5k depending on vehicle) i just bought 1.2mm steel sheet and 25mm steel box section in heatons, made a floor from that, then used 1mm steel sheet adhesived in with araldite for the windows, covered it all with cheap black carpet and VRT'd it. looks professional and holds 150-200kg no problem. Tinted the windows using the film from halfords and an underground carpark, no bubbles or anything, whole thing looks great.

Doing all that to a toerag will probably destroy it's value. Horrible vehicle anyway:D

I was looking for an X5, 04 upwards commercial but cant seem to find one for under 15k, if i could get a passenger one in the UK i would'nt mind converting it..Anybody any suggestions where to look for one??seen a few nice ones on irish websites but there all sold.. Also thought about a Range Rover, was told to stay away from them!?

Same with X5, poseurs motor, would be difficult to DIY commercialise neatly and retain value. Better off getting something readily available as a commercial here.

Sounds like you want comfort and style, loads of Land Rover Discovery 3 commercials, try and find one that wasn't used on a site. Range Rovers and RR Sports were never available as commercials (sacrilege anyway ), may have been done on landing here though. A black RR Sport was de-riguer contruction MD transport before someone shot the Celtic Tiger. Range Rover is the benchmark for luxury 4x4s, if you can afford the VRT, you can afford the road tax. Early current RRs are now sub £10 in the UK, probably more here though. Problem here is a lack of Land Rover independant garages, dealers are often clueless muppets.

One vehicle that gets good write ups in UK is the Volvo XC90, was it ever sold here?

What are you looking for in a commercial 4x4? As much as it pains me to say, if you want ultimate reliabilty, buy Japanese, no style though.

Apologies from a Land Rover and 4x4 die hard but so many buy these high end 4x4s for show rather than needing them  Only trying to save you money, not sell you a LR!

Also, do you have a business, may have to prove that on trying to register an imported commercial for the first time.

Would be ideal if i could find one as a commercial already. Only reason I was considering an X5 was because i've had a BMW 3series before and loved it, have driven X5's before and thought they were the business. Tell the truth im lost in terms of what to buy, I dont have a business but always seem to run into a time when i need a 4x4, thats why I want something thats going to be able to go off road but at the same time be a good driver on the road!I find Landcruisers, Pajeros, Navara etc to much like a tractor:) So tell me, you seem like a lad that knows his Land Rovers!? A good machine or not? I dont want something thats going to break my heart and when something goes wrong i've got to ship it off into a main LR garage and get charged, whatever the crazy hourly rate yhere charging now??another thing is has all the parts got to be genuine LR parts?Like the sound of a discovery 3 and heard there a dream to drive.. its got to be a commerical because, not that a couldnt afford the road tax but I just wont pay it! I wouldnt pay any road tax if i could get away with it because the roads are a disgrace! where will i find Range Rovers around the £10k mark? Definetly wouldnt recommend a VW Touareg??

The X5 is very popular in UK and I presume reliable, just can't stand them myself! Tuareg is probably also reliable like most VWs, just look even worse than an X5 :D

I am biased but the current Range Rover and Disco 3 are reliable, the Disco 3 being available as a factory built commercial.

To get an idea of what's around in the UK go into Easons and pick up a copy of Land Rover Owner magazine, not my favourite mag but has the most adverts for both vehicles and suppliers.

ive had BMW's and 2 range rovers, now i drive a landcruiser fully loaded, in my opinion i wouldnt touch another range rover , it will be in the garage 25% of the time , depreciate faster than any other jeep and cost a fortune to maintain as well as run . they are a crap drive a lot like a poorly balasted boat ! the bmw is a better drive but will be in the garage twice as much as the RR. however , they look great and are beautifully finished.

I would go landcruiser LC 4 or 5 in from the UK and convert if thats what you are after, also the Invinable version is awesome .

    my opinion ,your a bulling,

i have never heard of the likes of it, the retail of a passenger, and commercial, are 2 totally different things, but what you are doing is mad, your aswell, to just burn 20grand in cash, in a big fire.

let alone the fuel consumption, of a 5.0v10, probably several turbos, aswell, about 3miles to the gallon, i get more milage out of the double drive volvo i have than that ,and atleast it can bring upto 150tonnes, so it will earn its living

alot of lads buy 3.1 troopers, or vw golfs and convert or even landcruisers, which would make sence from a taxation point of view2, but that touareg is the best i have heard yet,

now dont get me wrong everyone to their own, but are you related to jp macmanus or any of that group of multi millionaires, to be doing this kinda madness
