Do I Need Anymore Clubs?

What I have in the bag -

    Driver
    2 Rescue
    3 Rescue
    4 Iron
    5 Iron
    6 Iron
    7 Iron
    8 Iron
    9 Iron
    PW
    SW
    LW
    Putter

I can have one more club to make the 14. I won't get a gap wedge cause I don't feel I need it and as for a 3 or 5 wood, I think I'm hitting the rescues well enough to compensate for them. What would ya get if ya had to get one last club?

Yes, get a 14th club, but opposite to your other clubs, ie. if your other clubs are right-handed then get a left-handed club, to get you out of those awkward situations where you would need one, eg. behind a tree, etc.

7 Wood or another high lofted rescue?

Or perhaps get a spin milled wedge for when you need to check the ball up.

This would be a very good choice especially if you play on a course that has a lot of trees lining the fairways. It'd be best to get an 8 iron just to punch back into the fairway. Could save you 2 or 3 shots in a round

I wouldn't recommend that at all. In fact i think it would be a total waste of a club. You'd be far better getting a club you're going to use regaularly, i.e every round. No point sticking in one that you may use 3-4 times a season. For those occassions, why not just practice using an 8 iron or something in reverse? Would be just as easy to learn as it would how to play a left handed club.

You should be able to work out from your rounds where there is a gap. If you can't, i'd say that's a sure fire sign that you don't need a #14.

    or 3w

    I'd suggest a 3W.

Based on the limited information you gave I suspect that there is a decent gap between the driver & 2 rescue. Even if using a HT driver at around 13.5 degrees & a 2 rescue which I would reckon is about 17/18 degrees.

Also depends a bit on your handicap in my opinion. Better players would probably see more benefit to their game from another wedge, higher handicappers from a longer club. A bit of a generalisation I know but as another poster has said you should be able to figure out where you need to slot in a 14th club from a few rounds of play.

Simply looking at your club list, I too would have said gap wedge. But it depends on your set and if your 9,P,S,L are evenly spaced as it is then you are correct not to get one.

In that case I would suggest the following:

Get a high loft driver, preferably 15deg, at least 13.5deg, and at least 425cc. Then cut it down to 42.5 or 43 inches, and have the swing weight corrected.
Then use it off the tee as a 'safe' driver, or when driver could put you into fairway bunker territory, or rough on doglegs, or long par threes, or drives with a big wind behind you, or when your normal driver just isnt behaving. Will be easier to hit, and more forgiving than your 2 hybrid if you already play it in those situations. Dont play it off the fairway. But it will benefit your game more than the extra few yard a normal 3 wood (or 5 wood) might theoretically gain you beyond your existing hybrids off the fairway.

What you have is a "Three-Driver".

    And benefit you game more.

:eek::eek: are you for real.....I was just waiting for you to finish by sprinkling it with crushed unicorns horn!!

why not just get a 3w with a large head.....callaways are pretty big theres probably more out there, and then it would be useful of the tee

or buy both and figure out by practise which is more useful for competitive play

Cheers for the advice. My wedges are nicely spaced so I can't see me needing a gap but my driver is 10.5, so there is a gap between that and the 2 hybrid and I guess the logical last club to get would be a 3 wood. Only thing is I hit the hybrids really well, straight and long, at the moment they are two of my fav clubs and I can't really see me hittin a huge amount further with a 3 wood off the fairway cause its a damn hard club to hit, so I might just hold onto my money for now as no one has pointed out any glaring gaps in my set. Cheers.

The gap wedge would definitely be a good investment. Find out what loft is on the PW (possibly 45 or 46). The sand wedge should be 56, so get something to cover the distances in between them.
I hit my PW about 135 yards, and my sand wedge goes about 90 yards. My Nike gap wedge goes about 110 to 115.

    OP what handicap are you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 856 ✭✭✭O.P.H

Truthfully, there's no 'about', about it. It just is whatever it is.

....well what are you shooting over par these days? Are you playing much?

If you are not playing much and are coming in "about 15" over par then I would still advise you to get a club thats going to help you out more.

Where are you loosing shots? Are you a good ball striker? Hit your irons or your woods better?
