Anyone any opinions on this for a good starter bike?

I started on an Allez Elite (105). 2006 I think.
    Deadly bike, still racing it

I got one of these about six months ago.
Basically, I wanted it for doing a bit of training again and getting fit.
I think its a brilliant, ideal for exactly what I want it for. I'm sure it would be ideal for racing etc. if needs be.

I could have got something online with maybe better components or carbon frame for similar money, but i'd prefer to buy from a local shop. And to be honest I'd feel a bit stupid with a top spec. carbon bike for what I'm using it for, just one or two 30-50km runs a week.

Got one in 05 used for racing and tri's never a probem, of course previous bike was a steel monster so the change was pretty noticable.
I'm 6'3 and 15 to 16 st one depending on time of season.

Specialized are good bikes generally so you won't go too far wrong there. You should also consider a new for 2010 season Secteur as they are designed for long distance rather than racing and feature more forgiving geometry which is important for beginners. Same components as Allez as far as I know.

    Hi,

I was just wondering where you lads went to buy your specialised? A friend of mine is interested in getting into cycling, and altho I have a Trek (if it's good enough for Lance it's good enough for me), he's veering towards a Spec. I don't really know too much about price ranges and best bike shops for picking one up.

I'd really appreciate it if you could let me in on any tips for bike shops about Dublin or websites that might have the best deals.

I think he's on the market to spend about the €700 mark so I would reckon that 105s are out of the question...

    Thanks!

Couple of questions, can he get it through the cycle to work scheme? If so that will save him money and up his budget.
Secondly would he willing to shop up north as they are a lot cheaper.

Not sure where your friend is based but on the spec website there is a list of dealers so you should be able to get one close enough to you. Mc Conveys in Belfast are a big stockist and Cycleways is the big spec shop in Dublin City Centre but plenty of other shops round the city stock them.

Hi, I am nearly decided on buying the above in Kearneys Galway, It's bright red which I'm not gone on! It has Tiagra fittings, the Shimano STI gear shifter system, and looks a great bike indeed for 1030 euro, Has anyone any comments before I tell hime I'll take it???

Jees, I would have thought 1030 was pretty pricey for a Tiagra groupset! I got my Trek 1000 3 years ago with Tiagra rear derail for €400 cheaper.

I had a look on Cycleways site as you suggested and this seems to be the one to go for; http://www.cycleways.com/store/product/45796/2010-Specialized-Allez-24-61cm/ @ €688.
Do you reckon this is the best deal about? They don't give any info re groupsets etc but I'm assuming it's gonna be pretty low end shimano.

He should be able to get it under the bike to work scheme as well. His office hasn't done it before so there shouldn't be a prob going to Cycleways.

As always, thanks for your help!

Well, it's not far off entry to carbon/ultegra, but then that wouldn't be a Specialized. The UK Spesh prices seem to be around £800, which with shipping is getting close to €1k. Not much of a premium to be paying for buying local.

The Allez is a nice looking bike.

Girlfriend bought one in Dun Laoghaire but I can't rem the shop name. Can't be too many bike shops out there though! They are lovely bikes. I rem it being around 700ish. I have a Giant SR 2 myself and hers seems lighter.
