Buckled mountain bike rim repairable?

    Hi guys,

Just a very quick question. I'm fixing up an old mountain bike that has been lying around for a few years. I was trying to get the back brakes setup but there's a buckle/wobble in the back wheel that makes it pretty much impossible. The wobble is probably between 1/4 and 1/2". There are a load of loose spokes as well because of this.

Question is is the rim fixable? If I just bring the wheel down to Joe Daly's would they straighten it out and sort out the spokes, or is it better to just buy a new wheel/rim? Any idea of costs of either?

    Thanks!

If you bring it in to Joe Daly's they will tell you whether it is truable or not, although from what you describe it sounds quite bad and "not" is likely.

Are you fixing it up for on road use? If so a cheap wheel is unlikely to be that expensive, maybe in the €40-60 range. You might want something stronger for off road though.

If it is old note you may have other issues with the bike, may need new casette/chain etc.

Thanks blorg, I'll take it down and let them have a look.

Yep just for road use. In general it's in fairly ok condition, the wheel just got damaged by lending it to a careless friend for a day :).

go to any LBS (the older the better) but stay away from halfords etc
recently got one fixed for €10 while halfords tried to sell me a full wheel and then charge me €15 to put it on
