Link between asthma inhalers and weight loss?

    Hi,

I read something interesting on Wikipedia the other night. Apparently, asthma inhalers such as salbutamol, the reliever kind, can be used to induce weight-loss.

Does anyone know the story behind this?

I've been asthmatic all my life, I eat junk food like a horse on drugs, and take my blue (salbutamol) inhaler a couple of times a day. I'm just wondering if the reason I'm not a fat pig is because I take my inhaler so much?

Doubt it, I'd say it's another case of Wikipedia unreliability. Did it cite a source for that information?
I used to have inhalers as a child (grew out of it as a teen) and I still put on weight.

This is definatly not the case for my sister. She goes through a few inhalers a week and is above ideal BMI.

As far as I know the blue inhaler does give your heart a bit of a boost like 'speed', but I don't think it's an appetite suppressant.

This would make a fortune for someone if it worked!

Yeah there is a metabolic link to many bronchodilatory drugs such as ephedrine, clenbuterol and salbutamol.
These drugs are all proscribed in competetive sports due to their effects.
They are often used to increase endurance in weight training and for their thermogenic/weightloss effect
Many of these drugs can increase body temperature slightly allowing a 'thermogenic' effect.
Where an increase in body temperature causes an increase in calorie consumption, allowing for weight loss on a calorie controlled diet.
But use of these drugs in this way can be very dangerous with serious side effects!
I wouldn't recommend it as a way to drop weight!
