What is the difference , if any, between white and silver fillings. The dentist quoted me a price for fillings then charged me almost double afterwards saying they had given me white rather then silver. I still have to get more so I'm wondering where I stand on this. Like I was quoted one price for 'a filling' it wasn't stated what filling I was getting but then the next week was charged alot more. I don't want to be ripped off.

    Honestly no.

I'm not colour blind, I know they are different colours I'm asking if one is better then the other that it costs almost twice as much and as I have to get more what would people recommend.

its more expensive because the finish is a white tooth, they are using more expensive products to get this result. If it was me I would be going down the white route just for the whole look thing, I hope you get something more concrete from another poster.

The white ones are for aesthetic purposes....ie in some peoples opinions they look better than silver:D
So it is up to you which ones you choose to go for!

The white fillings are composite. They are much more difficult and time consuming to place correctly than silver. That is why they are more costly. Also the materials used are more costly.

    Silver Fillings:
Advantages - long lasting, strong, easy to place by dentist, good seal of the tooth.
    Disadvantages - silver in colour.

    White fillings
Advantages - White in colour like teeth, non metalic
Disadvantages - shorter lasting, not as strong on back teeth, difficult to place by dentist, seal not as good.

Generally on back teeth espically silver fillings are more predictable and if the fillings are large. White fillings for front teeth and in high aesthetic cases. Its your choice, but the white fillings dont last as long.

fintonie - no offence intended but you post made absoutly no sense. You basically siad the difference beteen white and silver fillings was that on was white and the other silver. ok bye.

This thread made my day, :)
While we're on the subject of fillings, can I ask about my new fillings?
They're a really light grey- I already have some old fillings that are silver,
I never thought to ask the dentist. He used the light gun so I'm guessing they're mixed metal & white?
any idea yourselves? ok bye :pac:

    Hi everyone !

Just been to the dentist today, as my last wisdom tooth (came up in place of another back tooth that had to be pulled a few years ago) seemed to have a little hole in it and needed seeing to. So he basically numbed me up, drilled a little and suction hosed it out, then used a white filling. He used some sort of light to harden it at the end. Is it true that white won't last as long or why would he not have gone for silver ?
