Maybe it's a dumb question but i just cant find the answer on google, it seems to be one of those situations where its the one bit of information the pages i visit don't have! Anyway on my tilde key (or the key to the left of the number/symbol row anyway) has three symbols on it ; an apostrophe-like dash in the bottom left hand corner, an L sort of on its side in the top left corner and (maybe you guessed it) a vertical line like a small l in the bottom right. So how do i get the line character? I tried alt/alt gr/shift but it just gets me a line with a split in the middle. So can anyone tell me how to get it? Thanks.

Ctrl + alt + key? But that would be the same as AltGr + key

~ is beside the 1 on an American keyboard. On typical Irish keyboards it's right of the @ key, just left of enter, above the right shift, and below the ] key.

I think this is the problem?

    see here.

Another common one is people having to press shift+2 to get the @ symbol because they have set their Irish keyboard to an American layout.

Yeah it wasn't the tilde key that was the problem, it was trying to get the |(pipe) character on what i THOUGHT was the tilde key to the left of the number row but the tilde key is actually the ~ beside enter and above shift.
For some reason I thought the tilde key was the one that gives you ` ¬ and ¦(whats it actually called?). I've since discovered that you get the pipe symbol by the usual shift + on the \ key even though the symbol written on the key is actually ¦ and the alt+ctrl method on the key with | written on it gets me a ¦!! So I dont know if my keyboard is backward, I did have a problem a few years back where my @s and " were swapped around for some reason though i sorted that out pretty easily.
