Can anybody reccommend a good free antivirus/security etc programme that i could download to my laptop which wouldn't interfere too much with recording.

Laptop is Acer Travelmate 5520 with Vista and my soundcard is Fast Track Pro and my DAW is Reaper

I really only use the laptop for tracking and occasionally edits as i record but do most of my edits and mixing on my desktop.

I'd like to have the laptop protected (as it's not mine - it's on indefinite loan) but i don't want it to cripple the recording process.

    Avasti???

    Thanks guys
    C.

AntiVir is good and free. Auto updates every day and theres minimal annoyance from it. It just sits there and scans files.

Comodo is a good firewall as well.

What is DAW? How will a dual boot provide protection? What are you on about?

As in have two operating systems installed. Don't use the internet in the OS which the DAW runs on.

Its not perfect but it would mean you could tweak the **** out the non connected operating system.

I second the Avira AntiVir, with the wonderfully named "Luke Filewalker"

Sorry man, but this is the the worst of both worlds, to misquote Hannah Montana ;-)

I have a paranoid friend who has one PC for DAW and one for t'Internet, but dual boot system means that the same hard drive is susceptible to being riddled with viruses, even if the DAW's OS does not connect to web.

I use AVG Free, and it's been stable for the last three years. BUT AV software is not a backup. You should have a working folder that you backup up regularly to DVD or something (i.e. not external USB drive)

Well said this guy. AVG Free is what I use as well. Back up everything to a cd or dvd regularly and do a virus scan every two or three days

Well, yeah, I suppose you're right...I'd probably be as paranoid as your friend though...the desktop never gets near the net, but even still, I would have it partitioned, and dual boot just so the general sh1te that can tend to slow a computer down on the net doesn't get onto the DAW partition..An antivirus on the net partition would probably be a good idea too though..
