I was in Sorrento in 2005 for a wedding (actually the wedding itself was in Positano, round the coast), it's a nice spot, but rather couple-y if you know what I mean :D It wasn't too expensive at all - we weren't staying in Sorrento proper, but in Sant'Agnello which is just outside. It's a lovely spot. I would very highly recommend a visit to Pompeii, even if you're not into history it's still fascinating. Allow plenty of time because it's HUGE! I had no idea how big it was, or how free you were to roam around the streets and in and out of buildings until I got there.

Only one thing I can think of offhand to avoid - Naples. Dirty, smelly, dodgy and the traffic is lethal. We went there for a day, and after a couple of hours got out of there as soon as we could on the next train. We didn't go to Capri or Amalfi, but a few of our group did and apparently they're worth it, especially Capri. We did go to Positano, which is really beautiful and in such a crazy location.

I was in Sorrento in 2008 for a wedding and like the other poster, the actual wedding was in Positano.

For us, although we stayed in a 5* Hotel - Hotel Bristol we found the only expensive things in that part of Italy were the damned taxi's.

Food, drink and especially the wine were good value even in the Piazza's and boutique restaurants.

You MUST go to Pistano, possibly take a day trip to Capri, bring lots of money, and i would suggest spending some time visiting Pompeii.

We were there for a week so did little other than sun ourselves on the 15th floor of the hotel.

Smashing stuff. Here was the view from the Bristol to the Bay.

Havent been to Sorrento but did stay in Capri, which is well worth a day trip at the very least. Pompeii is a must see. italy is far more reasonable as people make out, and if you want save money find your restaurants in the side street and have just a coffee or beer in the piazzas.

    Hi,

I stayed in hotel Meridiana. Not overly fancy - but clean and good value. 10 minute walk to the main square. Not far at all. Recomend the Almalfi coastal drive, Positano, Pompeii and Capri. Good markets. Limoncello and leather goods probably best value. Only thing is there's no beach in Sorrento. There's a man made pier with a very small beach that's crammed with dodgy looking Italians in white speedo's (if thats yer thing...!)
There's an Irish bar in town - they have Bulmers! but very expensive!

    +1.
Bus leaves from outside the Sorrento train station. Make sure you do this! Takes about 2 hours (so 4 each way), sit on the right hand side of the bus on the way to amalfi for the best view. The front seat if possible so you can look out.
If you get car sick take your tablets, it's a bendy road

No, its the right of the bus you sit on on the way to Positano/Amalfi. Its the left on the way back.

If you are afraid of heights sit on the left on the way out and the right on the way back and try not to look out.

Buy your tickets in the ground floor shop of the train station for the bus.

OP- Was just wondering what travel arrangements have you made? e.g flights, trains buses etc

Has anybody that has been there before have any suggestions on the best way to get to sorrento?

The best way to get anywhere is normally the easiest way. Some may say the easiest way is to throw your money to Topflight and sit back and enjoy.

It is "better" to fly with Ryanair and get the train/coach to Naples and continue your journey to Sorrento from there.

The trains are sooooo cheap in Italy its not even funny.

Fly to naples, a bus leaves from outside the airport straight to sorrento.

And where did you book your accommodation? How much roughly would it cost? Seemed expensive from what I was looking at. Will it still be fairly hot in 4 weeks yea?

    I flew Ryanair into Rome.

Then got a train to Naples. Then the vesuvious rail to Sorrento. Easy. I had my sat-nav with me, I set it to pedestrian mode, and was able to find my hotel in Rome from the main train station! From the main termini in Naples, its easy to hop on a train over to Sorrento. Once in Sorrento, be aware that the central hotels are only a 5/10 min walk from the station. No need for a taxi.
