Im selling my car soon (may wait for 2010 to buy at this stage) but would like opinions on my list I have narrowed it down to.

I am buying straight cash deal (not trading) and will look to buy up North or from UK. Preference is for brand new but would consider garage demo

    Ford Focus RS
    Subaru Impreza WRX STi
    VW Golf GTi MKVI

    Any other I should consider?

If it was me, I'd be going for the Focus. Only if it was blue mind you. The green is horrible.

I also wouldnt be quick to count Irish dealers out - I would still shop around down here. If a dealer has one of these particular cars in stock, he'll give his left arm to sell it. You may still get a good deal, particularly on the RS. I priced one up a few months ago for a guy on here, and i got a good discount off the list price.

Pre tax prices in Ireland are usually lower for the cars. Bringing in a new one *could* see the price after VAT and VRT go above the Irish level.

I'd pick the Focus too fwiw

You will potentially pay VAT twice if you buy a car less than 6 months old from the UK.

The Focus RS is in short supply too, it could prove hard enough finding one here or in the UK. You may have to join a waiting list but it would be my choice of those three.

No if the car is bought in UK for export you do not pay VAT in the UK, Ireland only. Which is not the way it should be working...Just some good Irish Revenue scam, as always...

Golf is a little tame compared to the STI and the RS. You could throw an Evo X into the equation, or on the refined end of the scale an Audi S3. A Golf R32 would be more on par with an STI, but the Mk6 version isn't around yet. Don't know if there will be one, might be a more highly tuned 2 litre turbo instead.

Apparently the R32 replacement might be called the R20. See here:

Alternatively you could look at an Abt version:

Correct me if I'm wrong you pay some VAT if the car is less than 6 months old and has less than 6000miles on it.

    Great choices there.

Golf isn't even at the races with 200bhp. Still a great car though. Subaru in it's latest guise gets mixed reviews, and has huge running costs.

Focus RS wins. Go for Blue, or white.

That is something I'd consider. Would Irish dealers get their hands on one?

Anyone driven the new Focus RS yet?

Dunno, might be hard, but a dealer in the North would! The 295bhp version might be a nice one! It's always nice to have something that seems normal, but in reality is a little left of centre! :)

That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

Mitsubishi Evo X seems pricey here - €65+ new??

I quoted a guy on here €44,500 OTR for an RS recently. That had extra's too.

At that price, its no different that someone coming on here looking for a new 3 series or C Class.

Haven't driven the new model TT, test drove the older 1.8T a few years back but decided against it as I needed the rear seats. Now not too concerned about that now as the other half has the estate for all that :)

TTS is not within budget unfortunately and I see there's a TT RS!

    Scirocco (2.0L DSG)?
Like a TT but less girly and has rear seats with leg-room.

old TT aka mark one was girly!!! mark two TT definately not girly!!!
the general opinion seems to be that the scirocco is a girly car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 174 ✭✭futura123

For a few extra grand , a mark 2 TT definately has the edge on the scirocco!!! faster, leaner, and doesnt look like a glorified golf!!:D

I had my doubts too. Despite Subaru's iffy styling lately, i'd still consider that hideous.

OP, I imagine insurance costs would be a lot more in the Subaru and Focus, than in the Golf. Road tax will be as well ultimately, 1050€ in the focus, compared to €460 in the mk6 GTi

Interestingly too, the Focus RS emits 225g/km co2 so if it emitted 1 more, it's also would be 2100€! Seeing as the ST is in the same band, i think the ST is now pointless, any prospective buyers should go for the RS!

Similarly, the Mk6 Golf GTi emits 170g/km so its road tax is 447€. 1 more though, and it's too would be up a band to 630€!

If money were no object I'd agree. There's a big price difference however.

    Focus ST 3dr - € 36,755
    Focus RS - € 43,565

€7000 difference but the RS is definitely €7000 better! I wonder how long you'd be waiting if you ordered an RS from a dealer here?

A few months at least. €7k difference is less than I'd figured actually.

There are a number in stock, so if you were happy with whatever the dealer had, you could drive away in one today. :)

If it was a factory order, it would be a few months alright.

I would consider myself one of the lucky few who has the 09 RS. I wouldnt even consider the GTI tbh, as for the others mentioned, the STi & Evo X are both 60 grand plus motors in Ireland & in the top road tax bracket. The Focus RS is hands down the best value for money. Gets a little too much attention though for my liking. I'd say if you ordered now your probably looking at January/February delivery
