Copying C: Drive

Need to copy files from the C drive of an old PC(Windows 98) but I want to keep the directory names etc so that links in the various files(lotus & excel) don't get screwed up? I was thinking of putting them all on a flash drive but that will probably change the links etc when access from my own PC. Would ghosting work?

The links shouldn't be broken as long as you don't open the files until you have copied them to the new C drive.

as along as you place them back in same place on new c drive, they should be ok.

I am not sure that this is going to be easy.
You will need to install excel, lotus etc on you new machine.
This will create file associations such as xls.
Then if you copy your "My Documents" to the new machine the links should work.
Be careful copying over the complete contents of the Windows 98 C: Drive this will contain the old operating system and all its files which could conflict with XP or Vista etc.

Just don't try open them from a different drive (memory key)

What version of windows are you using? Lotus hasn't been updated in a while so may have trouble in newer OS (Vista/7) but I haven't used them to know for sure

Hmm-Thats the trick I suppose. I need to mirror the C: drive on my new PC which I currently use. The old PC is owned by someone who is retiring.

    Are they both Windows 98?

You only need to copy the folders with your documents. The applications + Windows files shouldn't be copied over.

Application generally need to be installed to work fully.

    No new PC is XP.
