installed internet explorer 8 on an xp sp3 dell pc, when the owner rebooted it the next day it reported that hal.dll was missing

booted into xp recovery console with an xp cp,
    ran
    chkdsk /p
    fixboot
    fixmbr

    same problem
    ran bootcfg /rebuild

pc booted fine but when i went into the c drive boot.ini was not there ( xp set to show hidden files)
rebooted and got the hal.dll error again

i googled boot.ini keeps disappearing and found it was a problem with ie 8
so i booted into recovery console again (xp cd repair option)

    ran bootcfg /rebuild
    booted into xp, unistalled ie8

rebooted into xp cd, ran bootcfg /rebuild again
and booted into xp, but this time it didn't delete boot.ini and i could reboot as much as i liked

    so IE8 deletes boot.ini
