If it's my turn to shoot, and the cue ball is touching my opponent's ball i.e.the red ball, am I right in saying that I dont have to hit the yellow ball(the ball im going for)? all i have to do is play the white ball away?

correct, if you hit towards the touching ball it can be a foul against you, it would be a push shot

Yes but you still have to hit the colour your on. If you were touching your own ball then you wouldn't need to hit any ball or you could if you wish to do so.

You still have to hit your ball legally.
