I'm looking at getting a laptop this year for college.

The one I was looking at was the second one down on this page: http://ireland.dell.com/ie/en/home/Laptops/laptop-inspiron-17/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-17&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1

I have max 600 to spend and want 2mb memory minimum. How would you rate it, and if possbile, are there any better alternatives out there for same or cheaper price?

I'll need it for using programs such as photoshop, managing websites, web programming and the like. From experience, this kind of thing is pretty memory intensive.

Seems OK, specs are good. I have a two year old version of the same machine hasn't let me down yet. :)

You must also remember that Dell is just about to do a runner out of the country, think of this when it comes to aftersales and downtime.

It a good laptop alright but is a 17" screen not a bit much I made that mistake before with a advent:o and its a sickener lugging the damn thing everywhere but then again for using photoshop and the like you need a reasonable screen.
But an alternitive is a dell studio 15 im on the verge of buying one of these now and they seem to be great value. but then again no real diff from the inspiron .

Im about to buy the one at the bottom for €599 but with a more powerful 2.1Ghz Processor it comes to €679

stock it still looks good with 4mb of ram
I just like it abit faster

For the money it's a grand laptop. Its got a nice LED-backlit screen, good resolution, good Core2Duo, 64-bit OS (allows for ram expansion in the future), 3GB ram, 320GB hard-drive.

I would upgrade the graphics card personally. I also wouldn't buy it unless it has a Win7 upgrade option - some other Dell laptops have this so im not sure why this model doesnt.

They're not going to abandon their warranty obligations.

It will just take that "little bit" longer.

I have heard of horror stories of laptops from PC Supermarkets being forewarded abroad for warrey issues, some taking weeks.

+1 on that. A 17 inch laptop is a complete pain in the rocks if you actually want to move it around a lot. I've a 15 inch which I've done a fair bit if programming/web development etc. on it and the screen size is perfect. (plus 15 inch laptops are more common which means that they're cheaper and there's a wider selection of them too)

thats if you get the basic warranty ie the cheapest, and it was always like that courier collects it might get it back within 2 weeks, go for the next business day on site warranty, they send someone out with parts to gaff and fix it, and the helpdesk for laptops and pcs has been in india for last couple of years , so it makes no diff if thier manufacturing plant is in poland warranty is warranty .Their server support and sales are still here with over 2000 people so i wouldnt really say ther are running off:rolleyes:

Yet another one of these threads!

I'm going to buy from Dell soon, it's been quite a while since I bought before, do they leave any wiggle room on price generally? If I say I don't want to buy now on the phone and wait for them to offer a sweetener for example?

Also should I wait for the Sunday newspapers for new deals or are they always set to the lowest price?

Lastly, any opinions on this laptop (bottom one)? No DVI output which seems extremely stupid but at least it has HDMI.
