Can't get DVD picture on tv screen

Total ignoramus here. I have a pretty crappy dvd player - "silver japan". The remote is woeful and fiddling around between it and the tv remote - a phillips - I lost the dvd picture - tv still fine and I can hear the dvd playing in the background but no dvd picture. I've pressed every button on both remotes without success…

Total ignoramus here.
