I recently bought a new Toshiba Satellite Laptop and need to transfer all my photos that are on my old (very old!) Computer, along with a few word documents and my iTunes library ( is that poss though?). How do I transfer?

Also I have NTL broadband connected to my old PC, what is the best broadband to use for the laptop?Id like to use it in multiple rooms.

Im not really up to speed on computers so if someone could explain in plain english please! Thanks!

Easyiest option for someone not up on computers would be to mpurchase an external hard drive. Take the photos from the old PC and put on new. Then keep the external hard drive as a backup of all your photos, music etc. Some day you will need that back up if anything fails.

Ok, Best way to transfer data these days is with a large USB key or external hard drive. i have an 8gb USB stick and it works a charm. I also invested in a 1TB external HDD to backup my files incase of failure. and its simple to transfer your stuff,, so dont worry:) if you dont have either, ask your friends, they could lend you one, or buy one, its a good investment, because its fairly cheap these days.

when plugged in, simply drag and drop the files (music, documents, pics or anything, to the "removable storage device" in "my computer". (here im assuming you have windows?), or right click on the file/folder and click "send to" then the storage device. this will copy it on to the memory card, and leave the original on the PC.

yes, you can copy your itunes library. simply copy/paste as before your "My music" folder (or wherever your library is) to the HDD. installing itunes on the laptop would pic up all the music once its coppied to the laptop in the same way.
[i'd like to point out here that i dont use itunes or an ipod so this infomation may need revision. AFAIK you can only use your ipod on 1 PC.]

Your NTL broadband will do fine for the laptop, but you may need to buy a wireless router. i recommend THIS, if you havent got something similar already. can you confirm how your PC is connected to the internet?

Thanks both for your replies, I saw a USB thingy in Harvey norman today not sure of the size but it was down from €50 to 25, is that good?

I suppose my main worry would be the itunes library as I wont be living here for long and all my music is on the old PC, so I really need to get access to my existing itunes library when I move! I might check out the Apple ipod site for help.

Not sure of the exact broadband i have, theres a hell of a lot of wires and a little NTL box, sorry cant be more specific!! I currently have a telephone type wire thing attached to the new laptop that I am on now, its working fine but obviously I cant take it all with me when i move!

Buy an external hard drive. If you have lots of music files you won't fit all of them onto a flash drive. You can copy music folder and Itunes folder to the external hdd and then copy it to the same place onto a laptop. It should work.

I did this today. I had transfered all my data from my old (dead) laptop to a folder on my new laptop (called it Old Harddrive). Once I had downloaded the Itunes software to the new laptop all I had to do was click file, library, consolidate libary and it transferred the whole lot automatically from Old Harddrive. I couldn't believe it was so simple 'cos I'd been looking at some very complicated instructions when I googled the problem.

The only drawback was that the art work on the various podcasts etc didn't transfer but the content was there which was all I cared about.

(PS I assume you could just transfer the itunes file from your old PC to your new one and perform the steps outline above. you obviously don't have to transfer the whole harddrive unless you want to.)

I think it all depends on how much data you have to transfer,if you only have like 2-3GB's you can use a thumb drive, simple.

if you have like 200Gb,you can still use the thumb drive, but you'll have to put on like few gigs at a time, will take ages.

The best way would be to use an external HD as suggested before,

Another option, upload it onto a hosting website and then download them again.

Or add it to a compressed file and email it to yourself...

But depends how much you have to send ,will decide the best way to do it,

If all the data is in the same folder, right click>>poperties>> look for how many gigs/MB's it is and let us know

if the old laptop has an wired broadband connector(RJ45) get a crossover cable.plug the two together set up a network and away you go
