ideas for jobs in the future

    Evening all, following post is a bit long winded, please bear with me:o

    I've got a couple of years left in my degree and am wondering what might be possible career options

    Personal background; old man worked for the EU so I moved around a fair bit (Ireland for 6 years, England for 5, Belgium for 7, France for a short while then to Ireland for university) so I ended up with a European Baccalaureate as opposed to the Leaving Cert (if it affects job prospects within Ireland).
    In college studying history and legal science and will be off on Erasmus to the University of Leuven for a year, before finishing up my degree. My college marks are usually a 1:1 (occasionally a 2:1 although averages out at 1:1 in the end)

    I'm just wondering what kind of jobs I could be looking at, I'm hoping to join the navy for a few years to pay for a masters, there's been two that interest me so far;

    MA in International relations. (I've always had a massive interest in current affairs, especially relating to the Irish abroad and their impact. What kind of jobs are there in international relations?
    LLM in human rights law; my main area of interest within law.

    I dislike being bogged down in one place so a job involving travel would be a massive bonus, would anyone have any suggestions on career paths to research?

    I think you should do what you want to do, rather than doing what you think will give you a job. The reason I say this is because nearly everyone I know who followed their dreams (and persisted to make them happen) are now doing what they want to do, rather than doing the typical 9 - 5 to makes ends meet.

    I would imagine if you want to go down the international relations route, you'll need some contacts to get your foot in the door. It sounds like your already have that with your father being an ex-EU person.

    Yeah, I see what you're saying.

    Thing is , both would interest me (I chose potential masters that would interest me and would like to see possible jobs from them)

    I was browsing through this forum and came across third secretarys in the DFA (although they wouldn't be recruiting for ages)

    Is there anything someone could do in the meantime in order to maximise their chances if they do apply?

    Charity work either locally or abroad. Ideally running some campaign or being involved in it as opposed to a grunt.

    (Thats if you need to pass a few months - year by)

    Thanks, is there a book or information etc that could give more info on studying etc?

    THe tests on the publicjobs site seem more general than the 3rd secretary.
