Yup I was there today too and asked him about it, he said he's retired but he is sticking around as part of the coaching team

Rumour was that Leicester were looking to sign him. Hopefully he'll stay with Leinster in a coaching capacity.

That's good, he had huge respect within the squad. Reggie back as scrum coach too, there were rumours about Hickie joining as team manager but dunno if that's true.

Cheika has a pretty good coaching/management team in place now imo.

They are obviously copying the Munster model when they kept Shaun Payne on board.

Oh obviously. Clear as day. Despite the fact that we already have an ex-player on the coaching staff in Kurt McQuilkin, who was around a while before Shaun Payne, it is obvious they copied Munster blindly rather than deciding he was in fact the best man for the job and hiring him accordingly.

Good analysis. You seem to know what you are talking about.

You don't though, at least with your above post.

In every sport players who retire from competitive action usually hang around and take some active part in the sport they love. More often than not they do that within the same club, country, province team etc.

Sean Kelly did, Kenny Dalglish did, Paidi O'Sé did and yes Shaun Payne did too. I don't think however that it was a Munster initiative.

Yeah I find it quite extraordinary that Munster were the first team in sports history to have a former player stay on in the set up but Aidric has proven me wrong :p

Dont even try and compare whits to payne, payne was one of the worst imports to ever play.Absolute **** job waste of space.

Whits did a job but never claimed to be anything else,Payne has delusions of grandure from what I have heard of him since he has become manager.

I always thought Payne did a great job for us, so dunno where you are getting that he was ****??

Also, where have you heard that he has delusions of grandeur? I also frequent Munsterfans.com and have never heard anything like this.......

If you can back it up with physical proof, as in something in writing, rather than "I heard" then great. Otherwise stop making **** up.

P.S. Thank f*** Aidric was banned. Never added anything to this forum. He was just as quick to slate his own as Leinster people, so none of us will miss him :)

Ah lads, Payne was a good full back. Solid under the high ball, if a bit unspectacular in attack. Even when he was 37 or something and had to come out of retirement to play he could still do the business. And I heard him talking on newstalk recently and thought he came across well.

Have to say I liked Payne, was a good solid pro who played to his strengths and did a job for Munster for a good while. Wasn't massively dissimilar to Dempsey to be fair.

Where in the name of jaysus you're getting all that from is beyond me. one of the worst imports ever? You've a shockingly poor memory of Leinster's imports so.

I actually think Payne and Whits were similar enough players in terms of what they brought to the teams. They brought solidity and an experienced head.

    Mixed up players

I think hes referring to the constant injuries Payne sustained. For the money they payed him and the amount of times he was fit I don't think many would argue he was one of the worst imports in Irish rugby. Not really anyones fault though no one could of foreseen this (I don't think he suffered many injuries before he came to Munster? Could be wrong)

Calling payne one of the worst imports in Irish rugby is akin to calling o driscoll or darcy mediocre because of the amount of injuries they have sustained. Come on payne was a good solid full back and had many great games for munster, and has been a great servent. Look up the thread recently about foreign imports. Would you class Payne with guys like Vermaas and Finnegan, or Gomez and Heikeniui?

    .. a great servant to ..

IMHO, that term is redundant in professional rugby. He is a paid employee of Munster rugby - he's not doing it in his spare time.

Back on topic, I hope CW is not responsible for the development of Paul O'Donohue's passing game.

Look up - take a step - another look - another step - pass. For all of his other qualities, his delivery was shocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭ALH-06

I've always admired Payne - good solid player, great professional. Limited in some ways but really gave it his all.

Whits was a gutsy player but yeah, very poor delivery! I'm really glad he's not playing any more, can't wait to see Reddan in the Leinster jersey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭ALH-06

And I've got high hopes for O'Donoghue as well!

A lot of people would say that Ireland has never produced a truly world class SH. Hopefully he's the man to change that!
