Scratch cup on there on Saturday, looking forward to it although I'm not mad about Sandy Hills, old course is better

A really great place for golf. Was up there recently and played Snady Hills a couple of times. I played Old Tom last year and have to say its nowhere in comparision on Sandy Hills - the back 9 let it down with a bang. I noticed that they are building a new back 9 to make use of the dunes - when that opens I'll have to play it again as I imagine it'll improve it greatly.

By the way did anyone take a trip to the Singing Pub - we found ourselves there a few nights - nice watering hole!

Played both courses up there in June - Class! Pure Class!

Though the guy in pro shop was a bit of a douche!

But am going back next year

In my mind, the toughest course in Ireland - Remarkably unforgiving (two yards off the fairway you could be gone). The first hole is a good indication of what you will expect. Hit the ball fairly long and lashed a drive and a three wood and was still sixty yards short (I think its 460 off the whites). The first green looks straight into the wind. The drive on the second hole is uphill to a completely blind landing spot which is about 20 yards wide.

You will lose balls if you stray at all. Unlike alot of links courses, the rough here is 'goat rough'....i.e. you're not finding your ball.

What a test this is - I'd challenge someone to find a course thats set up tougher.

Did mcilroy not win the 36 hole scratch cup on like +12 or something?

I'll second that point about the rough - its very unforgiving to a stray shot. I remember on a par 3 (can't recall the hole, it was on back 9) hitting into the rough surrounding the green. We found the ball but I physically could not hit it out of it. The ball was only 1 metre into the rough! It was the only time I just picked up the ball and walked to the next tee.
Have to say its a great course though.

Played there in a gale off the very back tees a few years ago. SAVAGE LONG. Drives, 3 woods and full wedge to some of the par 4's. Great craic. 1 of the guys I was playing with shot 76. It was one of the best rounds that I had ever seen. He hit 5 greens. He won the competition by 6 shots!
