    Hi guys,

Can you give me your thoughts on the car below please. I've never owned a mazda but this drives beautifully. I would imagine the fuel consumption on a 2ltr wouldnt be great but other than that I cant see a whole lot wrong.

The deal I was offered by the way (sorry for the edit) after some haggling was my '99 passat 117k miles on it, TDI plus 4500euro with a gaurantee of the cars nct.

    cheers

It's an Exclusive rather than a Touring.

is that good or bad? Touring v Exclusive?

I think what he means is it's not as advertised.

I see. Any opinions on the car though. Good value? Any bad points about them? Good points?

the 2.0 petrol should make it a good bit cheaper than the equivalant 1.8 model.

Looks like a nice car, they are supposed to be quite reliable. As for the mistake in the description, that may only mean that the dealer is not all that clued into the makes and models, if you check most dealers on there descriptions of cars they seem to make a lot of mistakes, such as engine size. for example, check any of the Merc C200 and E200 (newer models listed on carzone and you will see a lot of dealers will list them as 2L engines compared with the 1.8 supercharged .and the BMW 320 petrols as 2L as well when they are 2.2's.
If you are happy with the car, buy it seems like a desent deal.

Decent car, but it's pricey. €5,500 would be a more realistic price for it. That'd only be leaving you €1,000 for your car.

ok Ive looked on carzone it does look cheaper. The price he's selling it at on carzone is 7k. I think I'd be lucky to get 2k privately for my own, very lucky in current climate etc. So make of that what you will.
4.5k plus my car I thought sounded like a decent deal but maybe I'm getting carried away with myself.
Jap car, 85,000 miles (I know sounds a lot but I should get 3 years out of it at least I hope)
It comes with a 2 year NCT as he has given that gaurantee (I'll be gettin that part in writing!!)

Threw the reg in to cartell.ie and it came up as "2.0 SEDAN EXCLUSIVE TOURING PACK". Maybe that explains the description. Doesnt look too bad at all. The 2.0 will be a bit more to tax alright but it shouldnt be much more to run, and it will be quicker:)

that'd be nice right enough. I'm a salesman by trade so I did try haggle with him but he wasnt budging from 4.5k plus mine. To be fair my car isnt in the best of shape. It has some problems ie things like regulators broken twice in the past year alone, leaks coming in the front footwells, lock problems,
only good thing is the engine which would go forever

If you're happy with the deal and the condition of the car then go for it for sure, but just remember that petrol saloons in this country are fairly hard to sell on, and the bigger the engine the harder to sell. 2 litre isn't big to you or I, but unfortunately this narrow minded country think differently, and won't like it. Therefore it makes cars like these excellent value 2nd hand, but remember to get a good deal on it! I think €4k plus your own is a fairer price, maybe leave him sit with it for a week or two and then stroll in with your €4k offer!

I thought about doing that alright. I tried to get him down to that. I'll try again tomorrow. But yeah agree with you on the 2ltr cant understand why people just want small engines. People buying things like 1.4 corolla's, focus, golfs, or 1.6 ltr avensis, mondeo etc... Why buy underpowered engines for the sake of a few quid extra a year on tax.

Varies a bit but many insurers have a huge jump in insurnace premiums between petrol 1.8 and 2.0 engines on the big fleet saloons (Mondeo/Vectra/6 etc.), that's why!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Never found that was the case on normal saloons.
