Im getting back into magic and was so impressed by the cards from the new core set ive just gone an ordered four booster boxes. I was going to buy singles but for me part of the magic experience was collecting.

The thing is I cant help but notice how slick magic has become. I couldnt pick out any cards that are likely to become broken. This leads me to ask is play better (or worse) than when I last played (circa weatherlight)?

Hard to say as I'm in similar position. Last proper games i had were around Urzas Saga but i never was so hard core to get 4 boxes of cards... Its still the same game for me (well we will see about that as i just downloaded new rulebook) with, usually, better graphics. I wonder if Rebecca Guay and BROM still draw cards?

lol, hardcore would be buying 4 cases of booster packs :D

tbh i plan to supplement the cards from m10 with bought singles that i need. finding regular competition for play testing is the difficult part.

It depends on what you're looking for from m10. As a core set goes it seems to be well worth the money buying a box [or indeed 4]. There's certain key cards that you will be looking to pick up of course

The 5 Planeswalker [mythic rares] - Esp Garruk, Jace + Ajani.
Baneslayer Angel [mythic rare] - The best creature in standard right now
Great Sable Stag - sideboard card vs faeries
The 5 rare land cards - staple land cards
Pithing Needle - standard sideboard card
Birds of Paradise - staple since Alpha
Honor of the Pure - White weanie auto include
Elvish Archdruid - Used in elf combo deck

To a lesser extent you have

    Siege Gang Commander
    Darksteel Colossus
    Platinum Angel
    Gargoyle Castle
    Haunting Echoes

I don't really understand is magic better now or back in weatherlight? If you mean are the cards more powerful - I would say by in large the core set is much stronger. But since then wizards have taken many steps to slow down the extended format, and to put a larger focus on creature based decks in standard - which in my opinion is a good thing.

bo-bo where do you live? And what specifically are you playtesting for + what format?

Right now we are in m10 limited season, so this weekend we have GP Brighton and next month we have GP Prague, which are m10 sealed day 1, followed by m10 draft day 2. Most active tournament magic players in Ireland we be playtesting m10 sealed + draft at the moment, so if this is what interests you it should be very easy to somebody to playtest with.

After that I'm not too sure what we switch into. It could be Zendikar block constructed. A new set which we know next to nothing about.
