    Hi folks

Im 26 and unfortunately still living at home with my mother. I am currently recieving jobseekers allowance and i have applied for a masters.
I spoke to a lady from my local county council today who said that me receiving a grant would be dependent on my mothers salary. Surely they should only take into account my own finances? I am independent from her and pay board.

I'm in a similar position. But unfortunately unless you live separately from your parents and can prove it, they will consider you dependent on them.

Might move out for a few weeks so! Seriously though, they really should allow for people in our situations - surely its a relatively common situation to be in.

im pretty much the same, living at home as i basically cant afford not to. making
a pittance at work. moving to dub in sept til april for college.

is it even worth the effort to send the application? my father is a dentist, they would say that under his income, i would not be eligibkle for a grant.

is this a fairly accurate assessment?

It won't help you because it will go on where you lived last year. I agree fully with you though. I had to get all my parents info to.

I thought that you automatically received the Non-Adjacent (highest level) maintenance grant if you were a Mature Student (over 25) and that this was non-dependant on your parent(s) income - it was to be based solely on the individual.

    From Studentfinance.ie:

'Did you know that mature students who qualify for the maintenance grant receive the non-adjacent (higher) rate of grant?

If you qualify for any of the grants in Levels 2 to 6 above and you are a mature candidate, you will automatically be entitled to the non-adjacent rate. The entitlement to the non-adjacent rate applies regardless of how far your college is from your normal residence and whether or not you are dependent on or independent of parent(s) or guardian(s).'

Only if they are independent. There are two types of mature candidates - dependent and independent. A dependent is always assessed on their parent's income. But both candidates are entitled to the non-adjacent rate.
