Endorsement on my licence

I got an endorsement on my licence for careless driving after I was involved in an accident almost 5 years ago. Does anybody know how long these endorsements last for because I was never told at the time. I just sent away my licence and it came back with a stamp on it.

Why I ask is that I just got my insurance quote for coming year recently and I am getting rode. I was told previously that you cannot switch insurance company while you have an endorsement on your licenece so I was thinking if the endorsement has expired I might shop around and look for a better price.

    Any ideas?

Google is your friend, from http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/motoring-1/driving-offences/driving_offences
    Endorsement
An endorsement is basically a record that gives details of your motoring convictions. Prior to 2002 (and the introduction of the Road Traffic Act 2002) an endorsement was a stamp which was placed on your driving licence showing the details of your conviction on the licence. The 2002 Act amended the system of endorsement by recording the details of your conviction on your licence record which is held by the Motor Tax Office. So if you receive an endorsement on your driving licence from the courts you do not have to hand up your licence to be endorsed as your conviction will be notified by the courts to the Licensing Authority who will endorse your licence record.

The penalty points system of endorsement is also by entry in the licence record. Endorsements remain on your licence record for 3 years and must be notified to your insurance company when applying for motor insurance. Endorsements on your licence record will often lead to an increase in your motor insurance premium. Second or subsequent endorsements often result in disqualification from driving.

There should be an end date clearly marked against the endorsement on the license. If this date has passed, it's just a case of sending it in for a replacement as you would normally (for name/address change etc).

The replacement license will come back without the stamp/endorsement. Note, the endorsement has to have been physically present on a license for 3 years though - The countdown stops if you've received a license that doesn't have the endorsement stamped on it....

I thought that the whole idea of the points system was to replace endorcements?

No. Endorsements have far greater consequences than points. Points are cumulative, whereas an endorsement for a single offense can put you off the road for years and leave you paying the price (insurance wise) for even longer....

It's like having a big and a little hammer. One smack with an endorsement and you're really nailed....

OP when did you get the actual endorsement put on the licence.

Endorsement was put on in October 2005 (accident in January 2005) and they did not put any expiry date on it. Would I be right in saying so if it only lasts 3 years I can go get insured elsewhere and state I do not have an endorsement on my licence or do I actually have to physically send away my licence and get back a clean one.

If as stated previously they only last the 3 years you can try calling about for a quote. But in the mean time send the licence off to be updated as clean.

The best thing to do is send it off and get a new one. It'll cost about €15 or thereabouts and will remove any doubt if you've to produce your license to your insurer/gardaí etc.

ring your tax office to check it's run it's time first and then maybe check with the RSA to confirm. get the names of the people you talk to on the phone.

and then replace the license if they say it's ok.

My BF just finished 3 years on his endorsement this week, he went to the motor office to get a new clean license but was told that his endorsement only started when his disqalification ended last year and now has another 16 months left of his endorsement to do...... Is this correct. I tried looking up on citizens information about it but it doesnt say anything about the endorsement starting when the his disqualification ended.
Does anyone know anything more on this.

That would sound correct. The endorsement comes in to effect after his disqualification.

Sounds like he has another 16 months to go.

There's no point in having an endorsment on your licence if your banned off the road now is there?

Sending back your license for a new one is FREE if you are changing your address or having endorsments removed.
