If you have the money - PS.
If you want a freebie - GIMP

Probably better suited in the "Digital Darkroom".
But anyhow, there was a very good presentation in the Dublin Camera Club about the different software tonight. And at the end of the day it's all up to what you find easy to use, what you want to to, for what purpose and how much money you want to spend.
Probably everyone uses more than one software as as always nothing is perfect;)

Edit: In the presentation Lightroom was the favourite one...

XIA - the Lightroom presentation didn't cover even 10% of LR functionality, unfortunately. It is really sooooo much better than you can expect. I don't know if you noticed, but we were dying to hear more. Maybe next time.

I thought the aim was more an introduction to the different (good/better known) software out there. And from that point of view it was pretty clear, that lightroom is the best choice. I'd say the workshop on Saturday will cover much more. Do they plan more presentations?

As I wasnt at the presentation why would lightroom be the best choice over CS4 other than the obivious price difference and I cant get my head around lightroom.

Well, the price difference would be an argument for me - E500 is quite a difference.;)
But other than that what I understood from the presentation is that CS4 was never developed for photography whereas lightroom was and with version 2 has much more tools similar to photoshop. I understood for an average user CS4 is oversized. And lightroom seems to be easier to use. But again that might be different for everyone.

But I am not into postprocessing and only use gimp for cropping and rotating. So maybe someone else is better suited to answer that or was is discussed here before (I am ususally not in this part of the forum, but this thread was moved here)
