Poor Battery Life

My new iPhone has a very poor battery life. I charged it fully last night and turned it off. This morning I turned it on and it ran out of battery about 4pm. I wasn't listening to music or doing anything that would drain the battery. I checked my e-mails about 3 times and that was all. Made no calls. Is this normal? I use the charger in the car and it doesn't seem to put any juice into even though it says charging . I've done the upgrade. Does this seem right?

..... try turning off WIFI and Location Services..and maybe even turn off 3g..all of those should help..but ive heard rumours of short battery life after the new software upgrade 3.0 but mine seems to be fine :-)...but if your iphone is jailbroken an App may be causing the problem!

If you have jailbroken, it is worth reading the below from dev-team:-

Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.

I found push notifications and having the e-mail client set to check automatically absolutely obliterated the battery after the 3.0 upgrade.

It's not jailbroken and I have the e-mail set to manual. I've turned off WiFi so will see if this makes any difference. Updated it yesterday morning and have only had this problem since then

I dont know if its my phone or everyones but i think the battery is a joke. Have a 3G on 3.0.1 and the worst thing is sometimes when i leave it to charge when i come back after 2 hours is only charged about 10%. Its a bit of a joke at this stage. And dont know about other people but since 3.0 mine seems to have a really bad problem with over heating also. Especially during charging it not far from actualy burning you it gets so hot. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

I have a 3GS and I updated the software to 3.0.1 over the weekend. I definitely notice an improvement in battery life since! I still have 30%, and was last plugged in yesterday morning. Also, mine has always charged up reasonaby quickly. Zero to full charge in under 2hrs anyway. I've never noticed any heat issues either.

I also have my gmail checking for new mail hourly, I never switch wifi or 3G off but I did switch location services off a while back.

I have email checking every 15mins, and have had no battery or over heating issues. But mine is the 3G so not sure if this is something specific to the 3GS. But a friend of mine has the 3GS and his is perfect

there is something wrong with your battery then.

my iphone battery quick charges to 80% in one hour. i suggest you bring it back as that sounds atrocious.

Something worked for me :D Left it charging all night and it's still at 100% today. Followed the advice and turned off everything bar the essentials. Checked my e-mail about a dozen times today and still at full power. Thanks for the help!

My iPhone 3GS battery has become very poor. Was fine when I first got it but seems to be around time of software 3.0.1 and there are times when I can see the %-age remaing falling minute by minute. It is not jailbroken and I have Notifications turned off, have completed a restore as new and then today battery %-age was moving up and down, at one point saying 65% remaining and then changing to 72%...

I do not want to have to turn off 3G as some sites suggest as this is why I bought the iPhone...

If software 3.1 does not sort out battery life, I think I will have to send this back to Apple (through Apple Care)...

3.0.1 has been an absolute godsend since updating I'm having no overheating problems and my battey is even now lasting over a day which is a huge improvement if you read my last post. I restored as a new phone so maybe that might have done the trick.

I'm having terrible problems here too with this. But for those who are jailbroken and want the option of switching 3g on and off easily, download SBSettings via cydia. You just swipe the top of the screen and a box drops down allowing you to toggle it from there along with wifi etc.
