I am finishing up my dissertation and want to have it professionally proof-read but all the services I find on-line are very expensive (ie, 500 euro and up). My questions are (1) does it really make a difference and (2) do you have any experience of using such services.

Did an MA last year and as it happens I did get it proof-read. It was a strange process. I paid around 400 for the reading and it was a great investment (esp when compared to the cost of the degree overall) Of course you never know if it impacted the grade but in my case it certainly improved my presentation. I assumed impressions matter and having something that 'reads well/academically' can only help. PM me if you want the details of the person I used.

I had a brill supervisor but he focused on structure and research design which I guess was his job.

I would maybe consider this too.
What exactly does a proof reader do? I always thought they just checked spelling, but it sounds from what you say that they change words to make it sound more academic.
