Rad Am Ring 24 hour race

Myself and 3 others competed in this on Saturday and Sunday as a team.
It involves cycling around the Nurburgring in a relay for 24 hours non stop.

We came 39th out of 476 teams in our category (4 man relay), although the official results aren't up yet, so that is what we read from the provisional list after the race. I don't know if those 476 teams are all 4 man teams. There were also 8 man teams, 2 man teams and solo riders taking part!

We completed a total of 29 laps and the winners did 34. Each lap is about 23km long. It includes a 6km climb at 6%+ ending with a 15% section. You can easily reach 85km+ on the downhill bit just before the climb. Some guys must have been getting over 100km on that section as I was doing 89km at one point and was being passed out.

Check out a photo of yours truly in his Swords kit on the third page of this link: http://www.sportograf.de/bestof/603/index.html

I plan on doing a beefed up report on this when I get more time. I recommend this event for anyone. It was tough, but great fun.

Not sure which pic you mean, but plenty of chaps were doing that aero number where they effectively sit on the top tube. Not for me!

There is a photo on that page where a rider is holding her saddle in her hand, looks like it broke off.

Well done on that Raam, sounds like a great challenge.

Ah, I see it now! I even looked at that one a few times wondering why they are cycling like that. I must be still tired :o

Blorg, I reckon that event would suit you down to the ground. Manical speeds to be obtained on the descents... lots of climbing... very little flat... epic 24hrs non-stop cycling... loads of German beers... you would love it!

So how did the 24-hour thing work out. What was the strategy.... and sleep plan. I know (from an enjoyable drinking session) that not all people share the same views on race strategy -- oh I changed mine now.

That's an impressive achievement - well done to you and the team - were the only Irish team competing?

also, hope the guy on the fold up or the guy on the chopper didn't beat you!!

1 lap on, 3 laps off. Best way to get a decent rest and chance to sleep.

I saw a Pezula jersey in white with shamrocks on it, but I didn't get a chance to talk to whoever was wearing it. There doesn't seem to be an indication of nationality on the start lists...

    4 man teams

Oh they have some results up...

According to that link, we came 25th in the masters category. Not sure exactly how we fitted in that one. Maybe it's for over 30s.

    In the overall results, 39th

    Raam,

Great work looks like great fun. Are you racing tomorrow evening?

Corduff is perfect for you will even drag yo to the bottom of the hill for your solo breakaway on the second lap if you wait for me of climb the first time.

Want to ask you a few q's re lighting as need to upgrade mine for RAI.

Did you go "Neeeeeeeeeeeeohhhhhhhhmmmmmmm" whenever you crossed the line? :D
Well done, was there a couple of years ago watching F1 when Schumy was still racing and it was still fun, great craic.

edit: this is a freaky picture:

Looks like the ghost of a previous event is still trying to finish to make his way to cycleheaven.

I'll bring my lights along and you can borrow em to see how they are. I know some of the chaps on here have much better ones. Blorg has a system that can be seen from space.

What is even more impressive is that RAAM was our only "real" cyclist, the rest of us are aging balding men or triathletes ;o)

That is class! They had a series of cameras positioned along one of the sweeping uphills. It came directly after a fast downhill so you would get some serious speed along that section which you carry into the hill. At night time it was a bit freaky cos it was pitch black and all you had to follow were the riders lights in front. However, the cameras had red lights on them (probably so we would know where they are?), which I thought were other riders so I was heading straight for one when it flashed! Thank god it did, cos otherwise I was riding straight off the track.

Even more impressive than RAAMs ability to cycle a bike very fast up very steep hills was his ability to sleep on demand. It seemed that everytime we turned around to ask him something he was asleep on the ground. I don't know how he found the time to eat and drink.

Well done Raam and team, epic achievement.

If that's the old Nordschleife circuit then I've driven it a bit and walked a couple of sections - some of the gradients are absolutely savage!

    Nurburg is a magical place.
