Would getting a 3g instead of a 3gs really be that big a deal?

Can't find a 3gs anywhere in Cork, just the 3g.

The 3g is going to be a huge step up from my crappy ericcson anyway, so will it really matter if it's not 3gs?

Just wait for the newer model. Apple are just trying to clear their old stock.

    Personally, I don't think so.

The questions you need to ask are:

Do I really need a 3 megapixel camera?
Do I really need voice controls?
Do I really need a compass?

Most of the other features come with version 3.0 of the operating system, which the 3G model can be upgraded to.

The only reason I would change is that I am on a 1st Gen and 8Gb simply isn't enough space for me.

What about the faster CPU, double the RAM, better graphics chip, oil resistent screen, 32GB?

Absolutely, but these features would not be as immediately obvious to the casual user, apart from the 32Gb storage, of course.

i'd go for the 3Gs, i find the speed increase over the 3G very noticable. The extra RAM is useful aswell, but the speed is definately worth it i rekon..

If you are in the market for a new iPhone, then obviously go for the newest model. However whats the hang up with "speed". Is everyone so busy and on the hoof that they must have the ultimate top speed from everything including their phone. My iPhone 3G is "fast" enough for me and I don't have any lag when it comes to opening apps, ipod or anything else.

As for the compass, I've an app called Motion X (its free btw) that not only is a gps/sat nav app but also has a compass that you can set to bring you to waypoints/home etc.

The only gripe I have is that I went for the 8GB model which I thought would be plenty of storage but I've rapidly eaten this up. However, I won't be rushing out to get the 3GS. I'll wait for the next model.

Was in an office yesterday....someone asked me what the iphone was like...or..."how do you find the iphone" (I just put my hand in my pocket...)

i said i loved it...when a voice from the corner of the room said "it's crap"

He had the 3g, I had the 3gs....He wanted to show me something so he went to his text messages and then counted how long it took to access them. It took 6 seconds, the 3gs was instant. That's a pretty significant difference if you ask me.

How exactly is the speed of a device a hangup?? Its integral to its usability imo. Fine, the slower device is still usable, but u'll enjoy using the faster one alot more..

more or less my experience aswell...not quite 6 seconds, but close enough

I got my first Iphone in July this year, I waited for the new model to come out. It's as simple as this, if your buying an iPhone, buy the best one you can get that way your not missing out on anything. The video camera is the business and the 3 MB camera is great.

I've the 32 gig 3Gs, no bother with space or speed, my friend has the 16 3G and he's always stuck for space!!!!

Spend the extra few quid and get the best!!!

If you are interested in the third-party apps, Then I would. 1) The apps will load faster. 2)More and more game devs are porting there games to 3gs hardware and making them better graphically.3) Eventually there will be 3gs only apps.

    6 seconds to open messages??????

My 3G opens my messages up as soon as I tap the screen - same applies to all my apps. Have I an exceptionally fast 3G then or is the "speed" of the 3GS exaggerated by those who spent a couple hundred euro to upgrade for a few extra features and want to feel better about their purchase in these depressed economic times :D.

The only plus I see is the 32GB memory.

You wouldn't see any pluses with your old, defunct, 3G!

You might as well have this:

You may aswell go with the 3GS. Why get an old iPhone where you'll be locked into an 18 month contract with? If you're going to be locked into a contract, you may aswell get one with the newer version.

thanks for all the feedback guys.

luckily enough, i walked in to an o2 shop here in cork an hour ago and asked if they had one, just on the off chance. The sales girl casually said "oh yeah, we've a 32 gig left" and before she finished her sentence i was like "GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!!!"

just waiting for it to be cleared now

it sucks that i'm working at 12, won't really get a chance to play with it now till 7!
