Where can I buy Isopropyl Alcohol - also known as rubbing alcohol?

    - Its a great general purpose solvent and I used the last of mine (which I'd actually got in a little bottle as part of a cassette head cleaning kit) at the weekend removing a toddlers marker scribbles from a leather couch - it did a perfect restoration job and am sure the couch would still be wrecked without this nifty stuff!

You see it in shops/supermarkets near the household cleaning products when abroad but is its sale restricted in Ireland? - can we not resist the urge to add it to blinding cocktails? :P

Time to get ripped off by your local chemist. Bend over and try not to flinch as he or she looks for E13.75 for 500ml.

I've seen DIY warehouses being mentioned for this stuff. Methylated spirits should do a near-identical job chemically speaking. Get that if you can find it cheaply, but I doubt that somehow:D. The chemist could charge you a good bit for that, and you'll have to have a reason for wanting meths also.

You should be able to get it in a liquid form i.e. a bottle rather than an Aerosol in any Chemist. Used to use it in the last job.

Generally they will ask what you want it for, in case they think you are going to drink it.

Don't know the price as it is over 10 years since I had to buy the stuff.

Why not just buy meths? Any decor store will have it, without the rip off pharmacy prices or 20 questions...500ml costs about 4-5 quid.

not to be used for the like of swabbing cuts or grazes but since I think the OP wants it for cleaning/solvent use, meths will do the same as ethyl/isopropyl

For electronic use, I thought that meths leaves a residue behind which isn't acceptable on electronic contacts. I'm not sure whether this is something inherent to meths, or due to the purple dye they put into it.

Only things electronic I've ever used it on are tape heads and never had any problems, no experience of using it on delicate circuitry.
I mainly use it for degreasing and clearing fine dust from timber prior to finish coats. The dye is very low concentration...I know white rags I use in it dry out with no purple colour remaining.

Raiser, if you're in Dublin, nearly all chemists will have the 500ml bottle, in fact, just about everyone will flog you Isopropyl Alcohol from the same brand\source.

    dublinisoprop.jpg

Between 11 and 15 euro typically, shop around.

Ehh.. someone mentioned Maplins, the Dublin branch nearly always only have 100ml available, for some reason, at a fool's price.

This should be easy to find. It is great stuff. I use 25 Lt a month in work.

Ok - there must be a huge demand for this stuff as I have been into three chemists in D15 and none of them have ever stocked it.

Anyone purchased any in D15 area?

    Thanks

I checked with the pharmacy suppliers in the past and none of them seems to supply IPA.
You could try a lab suppliers such as www.lennox.ie instead?

Methylated spirits is Denatured alcohol with methanol ( the purple stuff ) added to stop people drinking it. Most hardware stores will have it. You also use it for shellac ( buttons or flakes ) you dissolve them in the alcohol and different concentrations to make different 'cuts' and then when you apply it to the wood the alcohol evaporates off leaving the shellac finish behind.

Just needed to buy some Isopropyl Alcohol for some electronics cleaning.

Went to local chemist ( its a Boots ) and the very helpful chemist gave me 100ml for 3.70. I was expecting to have to pay out the rear for more than I needed.

    Happy customer ;)

Hate to burst your little bubble, but there is a lot of evidence out there showing a link with IPA and cancer. Cancer patients tested had stored levels of ipa in the liver, whereas non cancer people don't.

Kitser that information is now outdated. More recent research has found that it is not Isopropyl alcohol that may cause paranasal sinus cancer but the "strong-acid" process used to manufacture it.

Sorry to "burst your little bubble".

P.S. Please actually check that the information you are giving is accurate before making comments like that.

Eh,guys, the OP asked where he could get the stuff.

He is only using a small bit of it to clean out some leccy gadget and removing a mark from a bit of furniture, hes not going to get cancer from it like that and die.

Stop making a mountain out of a molehill.

    Some people.....eh?

true he only wants a drop, but others are on extolling this great stuff, rub it into stiff muscles etc. and it has been shown as a factor, together with the intestinal fluke, and cannot become outdated. i realise its off the point so i'll say no more.

I bought a bottle the other day to can my Apple Wireless keyboard (the aluminium one), which I've spilled over some orange juice maybe a month gaol
The problem was that it's like the shift key was pressed all the time.
I tried before taking all the keys close the shift buttons but the problem just started again after a while.

I tried to find it in Boots in St. Stephen Green but they didn't have it or I didn't make my self understood.
But i found it in Boots in Grafton st.
    500ml bottle for 13.83€….

At least after using this alcohol to clean my keyboard, it finally wen back to work today!

    Thanks for the tips guys.

EDIT: to early to talk victory… few minutes after writing this the shift key problem started again… one more time back into soaking into the alcohol… hopefully the third time would be the one that counts.

i buy it from RS in dublin in small tins with a spray nozzle.
I dunno about using it on leather though. I would have thought it would dry it out and make it brittle

Just found a Matt Flaherty chemists in Galway selling bottles of the stuff in 100ml and 200ml sizes. Hoping that this is the purish stuff. I asked and there was no comment on the dispensing vat bottle thingy this came out of. 100ml for 1.51 Eur. Great stuff.
Alternative was a larger bottle for 15Eur from Boots, or another chemist on Shop St.
Just hoping this is the real deal not the 15% stuff I was warned wouldn't clean the dvd burner laser I bought it for.

If you know anyone working in a medical device factory, they should be able to get you a bottle of it.

My understanding is that you require a licence to purchase more than 500ml at a time.

You could always try a camera shop or photographic lab, it's used to clean negatives & photographic equipment.:)
