    My new E220 modem keeps changing from Green HSPDA to Blue UMTS, does anyone know the difference?

    Which is better?

    The trial I got of some new Sierra modem had steady HSPA the whole time , is this worse?

    Cheers

    Green is EDGE/2G
    Blue = UTMS
    Light Blue = HSDPA

    I could have those two blue mixed up, but you get the drift. UTMS/HDSPA are practically synonymous in terms of what you'll get with your E220. The E220 cannot do HSUPA (which when coupled with HSDPA is commonly referred to as HSPA, like it was on the Sierra Wireless 888).

    Can I ask why you stuck with the E220 and not the SW888?

    cause they sprung on me that there were charging me 119 for the faster one , it was the e220 that was free!!!!:mad::mad:

    i was never advised this at the start of the trial

    it doesnt matter i will be ditching the e220 next week anyway when i get my Nokia N97, will that do just as good a job as the SW888?

    Unlikely.

    you are right the nokia just does this:

    Data Network

    * GPRS class A, multislot class 32
    * WCDMA maximum speed up to 3.6 Mbps
    * HSDPA maximum speed up to 3.6 Mbps
    * WLAN IEEE 802.11b/g maximum speed up to 11Mbps/54Mbps

    Ah well, its all only a stop gap till i get UPC broadband anyways

    I think you will also find:
    1) Difficult to get a good voice package and good data package on same SIM
    2) The connection speed to PC is less than 3Mbps for Modem data (BT, WiFi or USB) on many phones
    3) When it's "tethered" i.e. a Modem, it may not do phone calls.
    4) Data packages for actual phone sometimes block tethering.

    In over 1/2 to 3/4 of situations the E220 will give as good speed as newer more expensive Modem. It does need Y cable for full power. The highest speeds are only available anyway when you are the only user of a mast sector and you have a perfect signal.

    If your signal is strong less transmit power is needed and the E220 will work without the Y. The full consumption is 700mA and most USB ports follow standard and only allow 500mA per port. Don't use a hub unless it has a 1A to 2A psu.
