I have a 13 week old Westie and he has just recieved his final vaccinations last week and has been wormed. All i have to do now is worm him once a month up to 6 months of age. What type of wormer would be ok for him, could i just buy this from the vets? is there anything else i need to do for him aswell.

    Thanks

Ask your vet - they will be able to advise on & supply most appropriate product.

Worming is generally done every 3 months after their puppy course.
De fleaing (stronghold, advocate etc). is usually done once a month but personally I tend to de flea less regularly I don't like over doing it. During the summer it's done more often here esp. with the long grass. Mites can be just as much of a problem so the spot on stuff deals with that too (depends on the brand some deal with more than others).

Parazole is a good gentle wormer for pups your vet will have it but be careful to measure correctly it's done by weight and it deals with lungworm as well as all the usual so if you're pup is prone to eating the odd slug it's worth giving them that (our fella so far has licked the odd slug and ate a moth bleah).

I find Parazole very good, I use it on the dogs and have never had a problem with worms with them except when my middle dog was a pup of course she needed regular worming but since then no wormies.

Other than that good quality food, regular grooming, excercise, training etc. and a trip to the vets at least once a year for a check up/booster etc. is usually all you need. Although there's the option of getting doggy insurance as well which could be handy to have.

If you have a puppy socialisation class (that uses humane methods of training) in your area might be worth doing, you'll pick up lots of helpful tips your pup will get to mix with other people and dogs of all sorts. It's good fun as well.

Thanks so much guineapigrescue for your helpful reply.

Im getting the pet insurance sorted this week hopefully, I have been told Westies can have problems

I would be really interested in the puppy classes but I am in Donegal and I am finding it very hard in finding any classes within a resonable distance.

    Thanks again.

I used parazole at first with Gunnar when I got him (He's a saoyed husky 13 weeks old yesterday :) It's what the breeder had been giving him and I just had to finish off his 3 day dose.

I got worm tablets then after at the vet which he eats out of my hand :D

The plus for the tablets are that he only needs two out of my hand and he's done. The parazole was so many mls for 3 days.

I use Drontal Plus and I've been told that they are the best type of worm tablet. I'm sure the Parazole is good too but most of my local vets just carry the Drontal.

I use Frontline for flea treatment.

I use these for my Westie and he's never had any problems with them.

I think most vets recommend both. Drontal is only about €3 a tablet (you need one tablet for every 10kg that your dog weighs) and Frontline is only about €8.
