Renting a car abroad

    Hey all,
I'm travelling to Dubrovnik in September with my gf for a week. We're hoping to rent a car for a couple of days, something small, Ford Fiesta probably. Should we be taking out insurance before we go to save money? I've never hired a car abroad before so anything to look out for in particular??

    Thanks in advance

You can take out separate insurance to cover the higher excess amount which is about €1200 with Hertz.
With this you can avoid 'supercover' type insurance which is usually about €20 extra per day.

If you are only renting for a couple of days and don't anticipate renting again in the next year it won't be worth it. An annual policy is about €50/60 euros.

Im looking at the question and wondering if you are comfortable with how car hire works because you are asking about taking out Insurance for the car before you even leave Ireland. Maybe it was worded incorrectly, im sure you will let us know.

When you hire a car you WILL receive basic insurance which will cover personal injuries, accidents etc etc. This will have an excess charge like any Irish home/motor insurance policy meaning you will pay a lump sum if something goes wrong and the Insurance company pays the rest. Its usually between €600 and €1200.

If you want to avoid paying such a hefty amount if you have a crash OR if somebody crashs into you and dissapears from the scene then you can BUY EXTRA insurance, usually called excess waiver cover. Some companies call it silver/gold all inclusive cover.

What price is coming back for your Fiesta? We can let you know if we consider it, in our un professional opinions, to be too much.
