Windows doesn't recognise that it's plugged in. Is there anything that can be done with it?

Try it in as many different ports as you can.
Try it after booting something like Knoppix.

No important data on it, or data backed up elsewhere - bin it.

Important data on it, which is not available anywhere else, and money no problem - pay a recovery company to pull the memory chips off it, and transplant them into something that can read the data off them.

Important data on it, which is not available anywhere else, and no money available - buy an identical drive, and try transplanting yourself.

Brought it to a computer shop. The guy took the cover off and gently bent/curved the board when it was plugged in. Worked long enough to get the data off.
