Hi, I have an external hard drive (format to NTFS).

I use both windows xp laptop and an macbook osx 10.5.7

I am unable to add files from my macbook to it, I get the message that this drive is a read only drive.

I thought at some previous stage I was able to add files from both my macbook and my xp laptop to this drive.

Is there a way to amend the permissions or something without having to backup everything and format to ???? whatever.

    Thanks

could you partition the drive and have ntfs on one partition and the mac whatever on the other

as above, mac's can read ntfs formatted drives but cannot write to them.

You could re format the drive with fat32 partitions which can be used by both pc'sand mac's , but you are limited to 4 gigs filesize which can be very annoying.

Another way is to install "macfuse" which will allow you to use ntfs but its a bit tricky to set up, google macfuse and you should get download and instructions.

When would you have a file thats over 4 gigs? (dvds are broken into smaller files, maybe iso's?) I have folders with over 4gigs of files in them, but I don't think I'd have any files that are themselves over 4gigs. Is that ok?

Found this application to format to fat32 http://www.freewarefiles.com/downloads_counter.php?programid=38041 I'll try is tomorrow if I get a chance

I have to this tomorrow, loads of other things to do, pain in arse having to rush this.

Folders with more than 4GBs of files would be fine as long as one file isn't over 4GBs in size.

Aslong as you don't download HD videos or have a load of game isos you should be ok.
