Fairway Wood and Loft Wedge Advice

I have no fairway woods and will be buying only one. Should I buy a 3 wood or a 5 wood. I'm thinkin the 3 as I don't have a 3 iron.

I will be buying a new loft wedge and am not sure on what loft to get. My old one was 60 and it was just fine. The 64 looks interesting but I use my loft alot and am worried 64 might be a bit lofty, what do ye reckon?

Nah stay with the 60. Because by opening your clubface before taking your grip you can turn that 60 into a 65 to hit a flop. I dont even open my stance and it goes straight up into the air no probs!

Personally, I have never used a 3 wood very well. Five woods have always been good to me. Now though, I have an 18 degree rescue now which is my only wood apart from the driver. For you though I would say get the 5 wood as you dont have a 3-iron. Also, I have a shot that I use with a five wood when im 200+ out from the green and in the rough. I open the face a small bit and swing a bit steeper and the ball comes out of bad lies a lot better and pokes it up there.

So for my second shots on par 5's I'd be grand with a 5 wood?

Is the 3 wood very hard to hit?

Would ya hit a 5 wood alot further than a 3 iron?

You might consider a 4 wood if you're uncertain about which to use. Think about what course you play and the way greens are set up. Are they protected by bunkers, or can you run the ball into them? This might influence whether you go for less loft, or more loft if you have to carry any trouble that protects the green.

I try to avoid using the lob wedge when I can around the green. With the greens being a bit slicker in summer, its always best to try and get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible and up to the hole.
I only use the lob wedge if I've short sided myself near the green, for example, if the pin is beside a bunker, and I've left myself behind the bunker and need to get the ball into the air quickly.

At the end of the day, if you're confident with the lob wedge, then just go with it. 60 Degrees seems to be the max most players roll with unless you're Phil Mickelson who uses a 64.

Well its hard to answer that but look at it this way: Its a lot harder to hit a 3wood off the deck when your swing isnt in the slot than it is with a 5wood.

And all the good players in my club keep saying to me you make your handicap from 100 yards and in. So its not that important. Honestly, the five wood will be grand for you. Sure Tiger loves his and he has so many shots with it. Get the five wood and picture/model your five-wood play around him.

I lost my old lob lob wedge and have been using sand wedge instead. I only used to use the sand out of the bunker or for long wedge shots. I find the "arse" on the sand wedge cause's it to bounce up of the ground a bit.

Let say you were 50 years from the pin on the fairway, what would most people use, sand or lob. I would have always used lob.

If I was 50 years from the pin I would consider re-evaluating my driver....:)

Ok, so going to get the 60 degree lob wedge and as for the wood, I've been adviced to get a 3 rescue/hybrid club (21 degrees), what ya reckon?

In my bag I have driver, 4 iron to sand wedge, lob wedge and putter. Will the rescue make up for the lack of 3 iron and possibly do the job of a fairway wood also???

Yes go for the rescue wood as I think it will be much easier to use than either a 3 wood or even a 5 wood. I'd even consider ditching the 4 iron and going with another rescue club instead of it.

The rescue wood will hit the ball as far as a 3 wood but it will be much more useful.
