I am hoping to operate a DTT system when the Welsh transmitters switch during August/September. I understand my LG tv has a DTT tuner built in.
The transmitter involved is Preseli. However can anyone advise me if a high gain 26db amplifier would be too strong. Also what group, B/CD or wideband.

I am about 10 miles south of Courtown and on the coast.

I would advise a wideband amp and hi gain wideband antenna because as more digital mux's are added they could end up across different areas of the uhf tv spectrum.I would imagine you would need the 26db amp but if you also use a very hi gain distributor you could end up with osccilation(signal too strong)which is effectively as bad as no signal at all,if that does happen reduce the amp to one with less gain ie 14db.I would also reccomend that you fit a uhf wideband pass filter to keep out unwanted interference such as tetra, mobile phone and other spurios transmissions.Hope this helps.Let us know how you get on.Cheers G.

Also a 26dB can overload easily with the digital signals. Needs to be very high quality.

    A Proception with variable gain.

Proception would be an excellent choice as they usually have an inbuilt band pass filter, cracking wee amp

Thanks gerrymartin and watty for the information. Possibly I should go for one of the variable gain amps. I could then adjust the gain as necessary when the switchover occurs.

    Presely is already broadcasting dtt.
A group B aerial is fine.

I'm using two of them and getting the lower power dtt from presely as it is, and I am just 20 miles north of you.

Whats happening from August 19th is simply the start of the analog close down with the switch off of BBC 2 and the switch on of a new 20kw psb mux as opposed to the 1.5kw one they are using now.
All of the higher power muxes will be on air by the end of next month replacing the existing low power ones.
All the old analogues will be off air by then.

Thanks for reply Black Briar. What gain amplifier are you using?

    I'm not sure the make,it's a very old 25 or 26db piece-more than 20 years old I'd say.

It's working the job perfectly directly to the sony but to the other points when ran through a distribution amp,it can overload when presely is really strong. We use an attenuator to fix that.
As you know presely analogue is variable.

T'will be interesting to see if theres any overload when the analogues are switched off and it's just the 20kw digitals that are on.

While I'm here,I'd love to know if Blaenplwyf is going to be omnidirectional.
If it is,the likes of courtown right up to Bray could use it perfectly I'd say.

There are still quite a few old VHF aerials round this area that used be on Blaenplwf VHF and it was very good.

Is there a local source for purchase of this amp, watty? I'm in Wicklow. Alternatively a web source. I see that a lot of the UK sites won't supply to Ireland or quote crazy delivery charges.
