Fair play to the Ros Minors, apparently Cathal Shine scored a spectacular goal to bring the game level.
Not bad for a game that they had lost @1 o'clock eh Orizio? :D

I thought it was still on, but then assumed I had made a mistake with the time difference...

Pity Kerry left them back in. How's ET going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,294 ✭✭✭gucci

According to my latest update via text its level, with about 15 mins left. Kerry led by two, but Ros have brought it back level.

Actually more accurately, i have it that Kerry lead by 1 point at half time.

Four point win for Kerry in the end I believe? Can someone confirm?

Thanks for the updates so far, they're much appreciated.

Ah well I was pretty much right...eventually.

Yeah you were lucky this time! :D
Unfortunately like the senior team, Roscommon seem to be suffering from poor ratio of scores to shots, and are victims of the soft goal!!

Oh well. Could have been worse.

But Roscommon have one all ireland champion this weekend. Hats tipped to Gerry Fallon

Roscommon dominated for periods in the game, missed a few frees and let in some soft goals (couldn't deal with the high ball) - that said Kerry had some good speedy players, took some nice scores, brought on a few handy subs and probably just about deserved it

this was a fine game of football, once again a rossie/kerry minor match in croker totally outshines the non-event that is the senior match, just like 2006 all over again :pac:

really match should have gone to a replay, roscommon were out on their feet come the end of the game and numerous players were getting treated for cramp before extra time started, roscommons problem of kicking wide after wide after wide after wide came back to haunt them again like in the connaught final, roscommon look to have some fine footballers there in the making, lets hope they work hard at it

    well done to kerry

Yes well done Kerry - don't think these matches should be going to extra time - the Kerry semi final wouldnt be for what 4 weeks so what was the hurry in getting it finished. Ros put in a huge effort and you could see they really struggled in extra time. I was surprised a couple of players were completely out on their feet haven given everything but were left on.

I know its minor but some of the players (on both sides) seemed very light & small. Thought the lad from Tremane Kilroy was by far the best Ros player - had a great game despite the few wides he hit.

Early days to say who might make it at senior level in due course.

small players at minor level for roscommon have become something of a fixture in recent years, the likes of dermot washington, cathal cregg, the entire 2006 minor panel spring to mind, Danial Qualter, cathal shine are both well over 6ft (number 14 and 8 in this photo) and along with sonny mcnulty all 3 look like they could walk into the roscommon senior team next season imo, thats IF pro-rugby doesn't get them first which seems more likely :(

Did Kerry use 9 subs on Monday?

Thought Rossie management made a few strange calls.
    1. Left the backs wide open. At times only 2 backs and 2 Kerry forwards in Roscommon half. Kerry then able to run at Roscommon and score or get a free. Roscommon needed to leave someone at home on the 45.
    2. Best member of backs Cafferky played at corner back instead of wing back 1-6 came from his area of field he tried his best but should have been moved to his real position. Grant Deeney should have been brought in at some stage backs were run into ground.
    3. Too many died on their feet maybe a few more astute changes could have been made.

Well done Kerry and Roscommon on a great match, it was a joy to watch. Great that so many are there for next year.

Look at my previous post. Kerry had 9 substitutions. 5 in normal time and 3 in extra time is all thats allowed

The current odds on offer are
    a) 1/10,000 GAA offers Roscommon replay !
    b) 1,000/1 Kerry are ejected and Roscommon given the match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,294 ✭✭✭gucci

Yeah it appears that they made 9 changes. However there is a bit of confusion as to whether or not this was illegal, as one of the changes came "between" the end of the old game and extra time, and therefore should it have counted as a substitute or not.
I dont know what the rule is myself but the irish independent writer seems to have his view on it, without quoting any direct rule.

    http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/no-grounds-for-roscommon-appeal-1852408.html

ANY appeal by Roscommon over the result of their All-Ireland minor quarter-final defeat to Kerry, on the grounds that the Kingdom used too many substitutes in the game, looks set to fall on deaf ears.

Kerry made nine changes over the duration of the tie, five in normal time and another four before the conclusion of the match, which they won by four points in Croke Park last Monday. However, any appeal will fall down because Pa Joy's introduction at the end of normal time in place of Jack Sherwood is not treated as an official substitute.

In the same way as a team reduced to 14 men can start extra-time with a full complement of players, extra-time is treated as a new game and in essence, managers can make as many changes as they wish between the end of normal time and the beginning of extra-time as well as a further three changes after that.

Kerry made another three switches in extra-time with their subs hitting 1-4 between them while Eanna O'Connor, who was re-introduced in extra-time after starting the game, added a further point late on.

    - donnchadh boyle

I think Roscommon have until today @12 to appeal, but surely it warrants investigation, regardless of an appeal, to clarify the rules so that everyone knows the rules at least. If Kerry havent broken any rules by making the change between the ordinary and extra time, then surely every manager worth his salt should take that on board and use it to his/ heradvantage!

will roscommon actually appeal this? perhaps they wont. alot of top gaa counties wouldnt appeal things like this.

the most craziest ive ever seen is the furore a few years ago as the signature was in english on the team sheet or something like that (kildare and sligo i think!) though may not have been either of the teams fault.

I dont know if they will or not, but I think they definitely should raise the matter and get it discussed. Many of the views or people posted here previously were about how the Roscommon lads were out on their feet and getting cramp etc, an extra fresh pair of legs it could be argued would have made a big impact on the outcome of the game.
So from that extent, its a bit more serious than an english / irish name on a sheet. (I think the case you are talking about regarding Kildare and Sligo was something to do with a blood sub and one extra sub being used or something along those lines, i forget exactly)

I think the rules need clarifying, I'd like to think Roscommon gaa will be examining the rules to see if there was any rules broken.

The management committee of Coiste Condae Ros Comáin have decided to lodge an official objection to the awarding of the All Ireland minor football quarter final to Ciarrai on the basis that we believe they were in breach of the regulations regarding substitutions.

Kerry made the allowed five subs in normal time. However, in extra time you are only allowed to make a max of three substitutes and kerry made five in extra time. They introduced two players after normal time and before the start of extra time and three during extra time. If this was allowed in the rule book i am sure Roscommon would have done the same. They will argue that it is a new game but if a player gets a yellow in normal time and a second yellow in extra he will be sent off. In a game as tight as this one, that can make a huge difference if you are out on your feet and a fresh pair of legs comes on to run you into the ground. I was at the game and Roscommon in the second period of extra time were out on their feet with players cramping up allover the place. Roscommon went a point ahead in the second period of extra time and but for a late kerry goal may have won the game.

If Kerry have broken the rules there will have to be action taken or will it be another case of the lesser counties being told to get lost. We will see in the coming days. The kerry players have done nothing wrong it is whoever is in charge of substitutions and also the fourth official dealing with substitutions who may have made a mistake and appeared to have wronged Roscommon on the double.

The sensible thing to do if Kerry have broke the rules is award a replay of the game and let the best team win, we will have to see how this develops in the days ahead. As i recall in the nfl game between Kildare and Sligo Kildare used six subs one too many and won the game. The game was awarded to sligo and kildare got relegated over it so a precedent has been set.

Going by the rulebook, you can field any 15 players for extra-time from the list submitted to the referee at the start of the match.
If it's not the case I have to hand back a minor medal I won with the club because we made 4 changes to the team after normal time and another 2 during extra-time.

As a Roscommon supporter I am very disappointed that they have lodged an official objection. I think any team should take any defeat in the proper spirit. Same way as players looking to get suspensions overturned because of some technality.

Yes Roscommon were out on their feet, in extra time I saw the centre back (who had a good back) barely able to stand up one minute - making a 60 yard run the next minute. But why didn't Roscommon make more subs and make them earlier themselves - 2 of the subs scored 2 points each from play so obviously the bench was reasonable quality at least and what was disappointing was seeing them put back on a player who was already replaced right at the end (that could have been a completely fresh pair of legs 20mins earlier)

    Straight from the horses mouth....

“Our real strength is our panel. We sprung a lot of fellas today. Those guys are champing at the bit to get their starting place and they delivered for us.”

Sprung one too many perhaps John?

The match report on the Munster GAA website lists 9 subs for Kerry

well that's put that to bed then (taken from http://www.gaaroscommon.ie/):

Statement from Coiste Condae Ros Comáin - Minor Game V Kerry

Date : 06/08/2009 16:00 11415.jpgFollowing discussions earlier today with Croke Park officials, Coisde Contae Ros Comain have decided not to lodge an objection to the award of the minor football quarter final to Ciarrai. The rules governing the composition of a team starting extra time would appear, on the face of it, to allow multiple changes to be made at that stage which do not count as substitutes, something which would appear not to be widely known.
We would like to congratulate Kerry on their victory and wish them all the best in their semi-final.

Eanna O'Connor was the last brought on.
I heard hes Jacks son? That would have been interesting. His father wouldnt of put him on.:D

this will make massive changes in the future. very few people know about this. glad its put to bed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Its a good thing for all involved that no complaint was lodged.
Especially the Referee in my opinion.
I know im very biased, but he gifted 1-4 to Roscommon in normal time, through soft frees, and lack of frees to Kerry.

Eanna actually started the game paddy978. He was then braught on towards the end of the game. He played alright, but his replacement Kieran Hurley was the Difference. Him and Jamie O'Sullivan. They braught strenght and stabilty to the Kerry side.

I do believe Roscommon are appealing as Kerry used at least 1,maybe 2 more subs than allowed.

I'd agree if that was always the case but about twenty years ago or so in the Connacht Minor final, Roscommon's Shane Curran scored a goal from a penalty, he wasn't supposed to take the kick and there was furore over it, Mayo lodged an appeal and got a replay. Roscommon went on to win the replay but it was replayed.

Just to add it was the final kick of the game and Roscommon were 1 point down.

eh? they were going to appeal against something as per their website and then they realised that there were no grounds for appeal. they lost the game fair and square.:confused:

as for the team, fair play, it was a magnificent performance in a great game that certainly made up for their poor game with mayo in the drawn game. alot of very good young players on the ros team. on another day they could have won, but when little things like this come out, it takes away from the game and very few people have actually commented on the quality of the game.

Completely different - I was there that day in Castlebar - it was actually Roscommon who lodged the objection - Curran scored the goal, Ros got presented with the cup but the ref's official match report gave the game to Mayo. Replay there was correct thing to do there
