People ive an Dell xps710 and only since thursday the fan starts to spin up for no reason it stays on for only a few seconds to 1 min and this happens about 3 times from start up and then doesnt happen at all.
what would be the cause of this or is there a way to control it?

Hard to know Dell fan control is generally inaccessible to the user, you could try some of the fan speed software such as speedfan or if your dell is a laptop i8kfan to see if you can gain access to the dell fan speeds.

Have you tried cleaning the machine? Maybe dust has built up inside it. Is it still under warranty? (if so log a call)

gave the machine a clean out today but still happening
    its a desktop
it only happens 2/3 from startup and then nothing.
    not under warranty

BIOS update perhaps? They sometimes change the cooling profile.
As pointed out Dell make it tough to access the fan controls.

Install coretemp to check your cpu isn't overheating.

Okay, how do the temps change when the fan is acting up, do they remain the same?
How do they change under load, run a game or some synthetc app.
I can't imagine them getting above 60-70 degC.

the fan hasnt started up yet only runs 2/3 times from startup
if i have a game going i always run the Graphics card fan at 100% the card never gets above 50degC

Odd, have you looked at BIOS updates. The release notes should specify if it affects the fan.

I've a studio xps core i7, had the same problem from new. Sounded like a hoover at high revs, on startup and whenever I opened or closed a big program I think. (very annoying, even though I fixed it two days after buying it)

solution - BIOS update (came out a few months ago)

Easy fix. Barely revs on startup and then whisper quiet no matter what i'm running.

Is it under warranty? Report it to DELL. Perhaps its a known issue and it flagged for a patch in a future revision.

not under warranty anymore the fan only spins up 1/3 times now from startup and that it doesnt happen again and only for a few seconds.
i have the latest bios update for the xps.
ive been thinking of doing a factory reset on the pc for a while now this could be the time to do it?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,522 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

I doubt it. A "factory reset" would only really involve reinstallion of the OS. Unless you also roll back the BIOS to a previous version. Your CPU temps appear normal. Did you check it under load? I think you only reported GPU temps.

You should at least contact Dell and ask about the problem. From memory their fourms were quite good but I haven't looked at them in years.

couldnt find anything on the dell site except people saying that there fans were running full speed constantly and there pc wouldnt boot up at all.
they reckon that the motherboard was toast.

    hopefully not

Well if it is something as awful as that you are covered under Irish and European law for up to three years, iirc, under reasonable expectation of use.
