nothing new at all but i got to say i would be interested in participationg in something like that, its about time cyclists took the roads again

Why? IMO, CM rides are counter-productive and don't really achieve anything.

There has got to be better ways of achieving their aims than this?

to biomed, cyclist take the roads again? thats the opinion some drivers have about their cars, retaliating with the same attitude doesnt promote anything but further conflicts. roads should be shared... hard to say how... but with consideration (from all) for other road users, this conflict would disperse.

We dimply need to take cyclists off the road and into separated cycle lanes. This is what works elsewhere. It's hard for a car driver to get pissed off with a cyclist who's not on the road.

Also, once you get a cycling culture going then the mentality of 'cyclist or driver' falls away as all drivers are, or have been cyclists, rather than some strange other type of person. I think disruptions like this are a strange way to try promote a cause.

I'm not sure this will endear us to the people whose have their front gardens compulsory purchased to widen the road. It would also be really expensive.

A more cost-effective solution is for people not to be complete dícks to each other.

I don't agree with the "taking back the roads" tagline of the CM rides. It plays into the conceits of the most ignorant of motorists - the idea that the cars "own the roads." It is better to simply cycle confidently on the actual road. I think these rides appeal to people who don't do that.

Personally I support CM meetings like outlined. It highlights the need to legislate for the least lawabiding road users. Brings the whole lawlessness of cyclists into focus.

Saw a funny one today, going to the zoo in the park. All the cars park on the main castleknock road beside whats designated as a cycle lane. Stupid cyclist (you know the type, all kitted out like he lost his way from the TDF) decides to give a right rollicking to a mother with her two young kids just ahead of me - "get off my lane" or some such drivel. He actually stops to continue abusing the poor woman calling her stupid in front of her kids. Another guy, who's after parking his car, tells the cyclist to apologise for his outburst. Cyclist refuses. Motorist grabs cyclist and puts his arm behind his back. Again he is asked to apologise, this time he apologies for being an inconsiderate idiot and promises to be a more considerate person from now on. Amazing the change in attitude!!!

Yehee. Welcome back Tim. Its been a while.
Just so that I don't misunderstand. If a person (in this case a cyclist) is being an idiot, it is ok for another person to physically assault them.
I hope that when you witnessed this lawlessness that you reported it to the Gardai.

I believe you are only posting in this forum to troll. Another instance of this and you're gone.

The interesting point is apart from some breakaways they are not doing anything wrong or breaking any laws, implicit in the title is the idea that a huge amount of people cycle legally at one time in one place thus meaning they are impossible to ignore...isn't that what most cycling proponenets want?

So true! The government must bring in laws which apply to cyclists!!!

    Germany

Germany pioneered the creation of cycle paths in the 1930s - because the Nazi party wanted cyclists off the roads. By 1936 they had outlawed cycling groups.

Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos.
