    Hi,

I have a VW Passat 1.9TDi 2003 and whne the car is not moving or say i am parking (low speed) and I turn the steering wheel I get a awful squeeking, almost as loud as a fan belt. I have checked the PS fluid and it is fine.

I am a bit worried as I need this acr for work and dont want to leave it in to my garage if its just something small.

If you need mroe details just shout

Oh its when stearing both ways

    1Love

    Jonny

Seized freewheel altenator pulley is the most common problem on these:) Check the condition of the fan belts etc and tensioner

You shouldn't turn the steering when not moving anyhow! Its not good for either the tyres or the power steering system.

Ideally you should be moving (even if very slowly) when you turn the wheel as you could create uneven tire wear and extra loads on the PS pump. It'll only cause very slightly more wear though.

This will be a seized alternator freewheel pulley, depend how long its being going on may also need the tensioner damper replaced also (will be wet with oil if needs replacing).

You do mean it's engine related, right?? I've been getting a very loud squeak/ squawk from the front suspension of my 02 passat when I turn. My mechanic looked at it and said it was a ball joint - he pulled the cover off and re-greased it which worked for about a fortnight. Now the noise is back again.

If a balljoint is worn then no amount of grease wiped against it will undo the wear. It needs to be replaced!
Also I always thought that the covers were sealed.

It could be a soft shock also, putting access ware and loads on the bushings. Happened me jsut before the shock failed completly. When it fails though, the noise from the suspension is very loud and you will be afraid to drive the car.
