My DVD player/recorded has stopped working.....how can I check what's wrong with it?

It was always hit and miss when burning something to a dvd but now it wont read a dvd or cd.

I wanted to re-install some software recently and the dv wouldn' read it then today I wanted to view some photos that I had backed up on a cd and no joy.

Before I go to the expense of buy an external DVD player I was going to have a go at fixing the one I have.

BTW, it's a Toshiba laptop with Win XP.

Is it showing in device manager?

If it is fecked, replacing majority of Toshiba DVD drives is an easy enough job.

Is there an exclamtion mark through the DVD in device manager.

When you try to play a dvd, does it recognised and try to spin the dvd?

Update - I checked it again today, it plays CDs (Music) DVD s(Film) but wont read a PS Elements DVD that I'm trying to re-install, I can hear the dvd player spinning but the software doesn't kick start the installation process, it also wont read a CD I have phots backed up on.
