    Hi everyone.

Can anyone tell me is it legal to walk into a carpark, like dunnes stores car park and distribute leaflets under windsheild wipers?

I know that it is legal to actually place the flyer under the wiper, but can the owner management of the car park kick you out of the car park.

Technically you are nt interfering with his/her property.

Oh and before anyone writes back saying "thats such bad marketing" for your company and will give you a bad name, trust me thats not of concern in my situation (in this case that does not effect me due to the nature of the advertsing)....its only the legailty i want to know.....

Can they actually say "hey stop putting flyers on the cars and get out of the car park"....?.....surely i can say "no" and keep distributing flyers?

    Cheers

    Duncan

    1. It is illegal to put leaflets under wipers, it's littering and fines up to stupid figures '000s from the council. All they need is the leaflet and they can prosecute.

    2. The carpark is private property and you can be arrested for criminal trespass if you don't leave when told to do so.

IMO only tossers promote business this way! You might expect a more direct response from the car owners too!!

Even if it is a private carpark, it is considered a public place and just the same as if you were driving dangerously in the car park you can be charged with dangerous driving, you can and will be charged by the local council with littering for placement of leaflets on cars.

I think the only exception is if the carpark is a temporary carpark on private land. e.g. field next to a concert.

    I wouldn't be so sure...

Of course they can. Private property, they need no reason to tell you to leave. And interfering with their customers (people get upset easily :)) would certainly be reason enough for me!

As far as I can understand & only from what I have heard from others is that it is legal to distribute leaflets on public property not private. In regards liter you can be charged for this. If possible do a deal with the car park owner say you will clean up in the evening ect. (Private) If public do a deal with the council.

In my personal opinion I do not mind if someone places a leaflet on my car. It does not bother me. It is however my property. Be very careful not to damage the wipers. I do not look down on it as the above posts have mentioned a bad name. Why not hand out the leaflets, people can take them if they want. Its a bit more work but eye contact a smile & some to answer any questions is much better!

Now back on topic, why not give your local gardi station a call. Mine are always happy to help.

Remember if you carry out the above in the OP you will only have 5 seconds to grab ones attention before its thrown to the back seat of the car!
Anyway, I'm sure you know what your doing.

    Good Luck! :)

I really don't like people going near my wipers in a car park.
I'm not sure if you need a permit to do this, maybe you do, but what if you had people at the traffic lights distributing leaflets? Then people can decide whether they want to take a leaflet or not or say no thanks'?
There is little value in wasting leaflets on people who aren't interested.:)

I think that would not be as effective as if you did it in a narrow public street where no one could avoid you. Much more people will pass & it involves less danger. You can also say something as they approach for example "Free Smoothies"

My understanding is that councils do indeed fine people for littering, who put leaflets on car wind shields. On a personal level I've no problem with it and don't mind when people market to me in this way, although saying that I haven't seen it in a long time.

What type of business are you promoting?

Look you might get away with it, but it makes you look like a joke. Do people really pay attention to people who hand out flyers anymore particularly in the way you intend to ?

I think it's a disgrace to go around car parks putting leaflets under peoples windscreens and if I saw someone doing it to my car, I'd be mighty pissed off and no, I don't drive a Porsche but my car is my car, I paid for it, and I don't want people touching it. This is just like spam email. Intrusive, time consuming with little real return if any (in this day and age) and if a business has to do this to promote something they have on offer, then it seems like a pretty desperate way to do so.

The only place IF ANY where flyers can be handed out are on the street when promoting clubs/pubs/restaurants in busy condensed cities with lots of competition. Handing flyers out for any other purpose is a great way to ruin your reputation as a trustworthy business. It just makes you look like a cowboy.

    Really is a bad idea..

Ive heard of some chancers who own the car ringing the number on the flyer saying "youve broken me wiper mister, fork out some money"...

Not worth the hassle or time.

I have to disagree here. It all about impressions, no dout a cow boy is not the ideal impression for most buisness's but a guy in a suite sets a good opinion in my opinion.

I'm going to disagree with you anyway even though I've no idea what you just said.

Seeing ANYBODY fiddling with window wipers to stick a leaflet under would really annoy me and wouldn't make me want to do business with said company. You wouldn't see Bill Gates going out sticking leaflets under a window wiper, you wouldn't see Armani doing it either - suit or not, it's an intrusive, spammy, unwelcomed way to promote something which annoys people.

On a side note, when was the last time you got ANYTHING good from a leaflet being handed out or stuck under your window wiper ? Exactly.

About the only thing you could get away with advertising like that would be a service supplied (with the carpark owners permission) in the carpark, like if there was a carwash/valleting bay in the carpark and even then I'd still get pissed off having to take the leaflet out from under the wiper and dispose of it.
