Anyone notice that BBC2 NI via Satellite had Women's Open Golf followed by World Swimming championships this afternoon while both analogue and Freeview had GAA quarter-finals. Was this because BBCNI do not have rights to show GAA to rest of UK?

they advertised it and said not available on digital satellite.... was it available on rte on sky in northern ireland? looks like setanta are flexing their muscle and trying to fleece the pubs in the uk again with the new deal they have done with the gaa to broadcast it

I had RTE on (with Sky NI card) during the pre-game commentary and it was working. However, before game started, I had switched to see if DTT was working and didn't switch back to see if it showed the game.

However, I'd imagine that if it was working for pre-game chitchat, it would've worked for the game itself...

RTÉ own the rights to gAA games for the whole island of Ireland. BBC Northern Ireland have the rights for Ulster teams. Odd that they didn't show it on satellite yesterday as they have shown the rest on satellite.

Short answer, yes it's to do with rights and yes, it'll happen again in a few weeks time.

Don't disagree with them showing Gaelic because of massive interest here in NI but if you had been watching the golf for previous 3 days and did not have satellite then you'd have felt a bit hard done by!

    Good point.

They do have a few channels they could put the extra sports on, RTÉ have some Saturdays when their is nothing but sports on either channel.

RTÉ own the rights to gAA games for the whole island of Ireland. BBC Northern Ireland have the rights for Ulster teams.

Hence BBCNI could show it on Sat since that would make it available in the Republic, I am surprised that they didn't go with the other sports on BBC NI on Virgin Media or UPC.

They should have put the golf on one of their interactive streams and shown it on Freeview. One of the 2 streams on freeview was showing a rolling sports loop until 5.00pm when the swimming came on so they could have shown the golf to a conclusion on this stream. At least the swimming on interactive meant that fans of it here in NI weren't deprived of the climax of the World Championships.

It's not quite as easy as that - the red button streams on DTT are national feeds, the two local versions of BBC1 and BBC2 NI are controlled locally by BBC NI.

SRB... you seem to know a bit about the rights issue etc. am I right in saying that bbc NI can show it on satellitte up to the ulster final and if any of the ulster teams get past it they have to negotatiate a match by match deal with the gaa/rte for coverage.. this year being the first year that bbc NI have been blocked from showing it on satellite probably because the new setanta hibernia company exercised their muscle with the gaa and said it would effect their planned sales to pubs in the uK???

No idea - I just 'phoned at the start of the week and asked why they hadn't shown the match on Sat, rights issues was the reason given, I didn't go into any deeper details.

Take your point but they showed the swimming on the red button even though like the golf it was not shown nationally i.e. not shown in NI on BBC2 analogue and Freeview because of GAA. Why put the swimming on the red button (which really only benefited NI viewers) and not the golf?

Yes, but that wasn't anything to do with BBC NI - the swimming was on while the Golf was on - had coverage overlapped the swimming was still available across the UK on the red button. It would have been the case even if BBC NI hadn't been carrying the matches on their services.

Many thanks for excellent explanation. Still think that golf fans here in NI without access to satellite had reason to feel aggrieved. Pity BBC NI could not even have shown highlights of final round later on that night as they have done in the past.

What was on BBC 1 and BBC 2 during the GAA match?

BBC NIs coverage of GAA is poor at best.

Antrim v Kerry wasnt shown at all.

Yet Football is the largest crowd puller in the North.

Yet, the 'Milk Cup' was shown every nite-some things never change.

I guess they're damned if they do and damned if they don't !

The rights issue is the major issue I'd imagine, given they are FTA.

Maybe, tho if northern interest runs out of steam-forget it.

You'll get the football final, thats about it.

BBC2 showed Women's British Open golf (Satellite only/GAA on Analogue/Freeview) while BBC1- if my memory serves me right - had Eastenders Omnibus.
As regards BBC NI's GAA coverage compared to RTE yes it is poor but I suppose they are limited to Ulster interest only while RTE cover the whole of the island. Strange though that Antrim vs Kerry was not covered. Let's hope when RTE analogue is switched off in ROI it will by then be available on Freeview here in NI so we won't have to go out and buy another set top box or iDTV!

I may be wrong, but I was informed that the Antrim v Kerry match wasnt on RTE either.

Could BBC NI not have put GAA on instead of the EastEnders Omnibus?

Probably but would have annoyed Eastenders fans in the process so I suppose they simply couldn't win whatever they did.

Could they have rescheduled EastEnders, get rid of Murder She Wrote?

Again yesterday (Sunday) BBC2 NI had gaelic football on Analogue/Freeview with final day of World Athletics on satellite. Seemed to be the same scenario with the golf as those in NI who were watching the athletics for previous days could not see climax to championships unless they had satellite. At least I assume so as I was unable to check whether any of the Freeview interactive streams covered the athletics.

So wait your telling me that all the people thanking god for the BBC in ROI weren't watching Atheltics on BBC NI via UPC?

Sorry for my total ignorance but can you explain? I was referring to viewers in NI being deprived of athletics but unsure about the point made about ROI viewers.

RTÉ didn't show any of the games.
