Random Triathlon Query

    So I was just having a chat with my mate the other night who is also fairly new to triathlon and we were discussing the points system we have for national selection for sending our top athletes to things like the European championships;

    And one thing neither of us knew but perhaps someone here does - How do we here in Ireland select our athletes for the Olympics? If I recall correctly we only had 1 triathlete at Beijing. Is it simply the top performer from the points system now?

    Cheers!

    Nope... national series has nothing to do with Olympic selection. You have to qualify to get into the oympics - in international elite races. Gavin Nobel didn't qualify for the last Olympics - I'm sure if Triathlon Ireland could have sent him they would have. Emma Davis qualified & went.

    An athlete could score points for their Olympic ranking between June 2006 and June 2008 at: World Championships, Continental Champsionships (i.e. Europeans, PanAms, Oceania, Asia, Africa), and ITU Cup Races.

    Qualification places for Beijing were allocated, in order, as follows:

    1) Places 1-5 : Continental 2008 Champions
    2) Places 6-8 : Top 3 at 2008 Worlds
    3) Places 9-47 : Highest ranked Olympic Ranked athletes.
    4) Places 48-52 : "New Flag". From each continent, the highest ranked athlete from a country without representation under criteria 1 to 3 above.
    5) Place 53 : China - Host nation (if not represented under 1-4 above)
    6) Places 54-55 : IOC/ITU/ANOC Invitation places.

    All of the above athletes were subject to minimum ranking criteria. The top 8 countries could have 3 athletes and it was 2 max after that. Each selection criterion above would roll down if athletes were ineligible (country over quota) or had already been selected.

    Gavin didn't qualify under criteria 1-3 and was pursuing a ranking as the highest "New Flag" European athlete which would have got him selected under (4) but he was outscored in the 2008 European Championships by a Slovakian and missed out in the final rankings.

    Emma had a string of good World Cup races in 2008 and qualified under (3) above for Spot #42.

    I assume it will be a broadly similar qualification format for London.

    The final Beijing qualification rolldowns can be seen on the ITU site here:
